Exeter? Ask a teacher

It was amazing.

do you think it will hard to get used to the teaching method at BS for an international (UK) student. especially if they only join as a 10th/11th grade student?

Harkness takes a while to get used to no matter when you start. As long as you’re open-minded and make an effort, you’ll get the hang of it (and you won’t be the only new student in your classes).

Now this question may seem a tad shallow xD But its actually something I’ve been wondering. Does anyone know if girls (or guys, I suppose), allowed to have hair-straighteners in their room? Also, is there a policy on hair dying? (such as not dying you hair unnatural colors.) Thank you!

There’s no policy on hair dying. Express yourself. I’m not quite sure how a hair-straightener works, but we do allow hair dryers.

A lot of people do have hair straighteners. The E-Book says “no flat irons”, but I think that is mainly referring to clothes irons.

I want to keep this thread alive; I do still have a few questions.

As far as I know, the dormitory entry doors are equipped with keycard locks but they work for any student. Is there going to be a renovation/upgrade in the near future that limits entry to dorm buildings to only those living in that building?

What’s with the ID card pictures? When are they taken? Are they done by a professional photography firm or is it just standing against a white wall and “snap”? Do you bring your own photo?

With Saturdays eliminated now, technically Exeter students now have 4.5 days of school a week. How is this going to affect us in the long run?

I’m not a teacher but I know the answers to some of your questions. (I’m a parent.)

Don’t know.

ID card pictures are taken by security during registration. Standing against a white wall and snap would be a good description for the first year. After that they are taken at the end of the year.

If you look at the calendar for next year you will see that an additional week has been added at the end of the year. Graduation has been pushed off until June 10th instead of June 5th as it was this year. I believe that is to make up for the missing Saturday classes. I think this is experimental and you may see the Saturday classes returning if the faculty doesn’t like the new schedule.

Ah, thank you for the advice and explanations. Appreciate it.

Some more random questions, I guess -

Do people take showers more in their own dorms or in the gym, after sports?

From a student’s perspective, how crowded do the double dorms really get?

Has there been a lot of problems with having any student allowed into any dorm?

Let’s see.

I know my daughter for one likes to go back to her dorm to shower after sports.

Do you mean the double rooms? They’re really pretty big. The singles are tiny. So I don’t think it’s a problem space-wise.

Why wouldn’t you want your friends to be able to come in your dorm? I don’t think there have been any problems with this. I think opposite sex has to get permission to come to the rooms but common room is okay for everyone.

I’m back on this site and should be checking it regularly in the next few weeks. Thanks PhotoOp for stepping in. A few more thoughts/additions:

 1. Regarding limiting dorm entry to dorm residents, there’s no such plan in the works that I’m aware of. I think the general sense is that if you’re a member of the Exeter community, you should have access to all dorms/buildings. Even though dorms are often tight communities, most students have close friends who don’t live in their dorms, and, of course, day students don’t have a dorm of their own, so trying to somehow “fence off” dorms or restrict them to residents is impractical and probably unwise.
 2. Showering is much more common in dorms than at the gym, presumably because dorm showers afford more privacy (yes, shower stalls have curtains… :))
 3. Dorm rooms vary widely across dorms and even within dorms. By and large, they’re bigger than most college dorm rooms.

What are the different girls dorms?

Do you mean the names of the dorms?

Yes. Thanks!

PEATeacher, do you know if flu shots are provided to the students in the fall?

I can answer that one…yes, flu shots are provided, unless parents specifically opt their kid out. Last year, the kids went as a group with their dorm–I assume to make sure they all actually showed up for the shot.

Right. Last year they also gave you a choice between traditional shot and nasal spray.

do you know what the average dorm has?

What do you mean?

What furniture does the typical dorm have? Sorry for the confusion.
