Exeter- auditing classes?

I'm a prep next year at Exeter, and I recently read something about "auditing" classes.
My courseload is;
Biology
English
Health
Latin
History
Math
Private Music Lessons (audit)

Is it completely ridiculous to consider auditing a class (ie. a language), if I intended to join clubs, etc?

Auditing classes usually takes up your normal free, but preps/new lowers don’t have a normal free since they have to take health…so you probably can’t audit any classes.

Not on topic, but why audit your music lesson? Are you aware that a year’s worth of music lessons for credit (pass/fail) equal one fine arts credit?

If you’re interested in another language, you might join a club focused on that language/culture instead.

Possible advantages of auditing music lessons:

You don’t have to attend the 1 required concert per term. (Although you should go because they’re worthwhile.)

You don’t have to take lessons all three terms of the year.

You have the option to take half-lessons, if you wish to save time or money.

I’m interested in this to. Would it be possible to audit a language in prep year?

I agree with your first and third advantages musisat (though it’s hard to see the one concert obligation as a dealbreaker!), but taking lessons for credit one term doesn’t mean you have to take them all three. It makes sense to take them for credit first term, I think, then drop if you want to go to a shorter lesson. Otherwise you miss the chance to get that fine arts credit through lessons for the year–unless three consecutive semesters includes taking lessons winter, spring and the following fall. I can’t figure that one out.

I think some preps get confused and think they can’t go over the 6 2/3 credit load. If that’s the confusion, I just wanted to point out that it’s possible to take both lessons and ensemble for credit prep year in addition to a regular course load.

But, yeah, given that you have to take health, I don’t see how you’d fit in an extra language prep year, even to audit. There are lots of opportunities, though, to be exposed to another language–clubs, visiting scholars, etc. Still, you should definitely consult your adviser.

Okay, I’ve decided that I’m going to take piano for credit, and see after fall term if I can handle auditing another class!

I think I’ll wait. I am taking orchestra, violin lessons, and piano lessons, so that will take up a lot of time,

Once you get to Exeter, too, you can talk things over with your real adviser and with faculty in the language department–there’s a lot to adjust to fall term, and Latin’s one of the tougher languages at Exeter, so I think you’re wise to not pile too much on your plate right away.
