Exeter Deadline is January 15th!

Three more days left. How is everyone doing with their applications?

Feel free to rant/ freak out/ ask questions/ whatever here. :)

I’m still considering whether to have my parents send a parent statement (optional).
Thoughts on this?

Hi intrinsically -

I’m a parent, and I was glad to fill out the parent statements for my son. I figured that his dad and I know him better than anyone else, and could give an in-depth view of his strengths/weaknesses, etc. (which is what they ask about). The people writing the recommendation letters (teachers, counselor, coaches, etc.) have a different perspective than his parents. I think the more information the school has, the better.

That being said - are your parents supportive of your application? You would not want anything sent in that would be negative.

@intrinsically,
I remember reading somewhere that you were international, so correct me if I’m wrong. But, if you’re international, do your parents have a good command of the English language? After reading your posts, you clearly are very good at expressing yourself with English. If your parents don’t speak/write the best English, than I wouldn’t have them send the parent statement.

@ mountainhiker;

Thanks for the advice!

@ifax;
I’m domestic haha, but my parents are not the best at English (they speak Chinese as a first language). At the interview for example, my dad was struggling a little bit with what term to use to best express his meaning. I think they are good enough in English to be able to fill out the parent statement, though, if they worked a bit harder than normal on it.

Obviously, it’s not necessary, but I think it shows the parent’s support for the application, which is a good thing.

And they don’t have to say much. Even if all they say is that they want the best for you and for you to be in a good school, that would be good. Yes, it could say lots more than that, but it doesn’t have to.

My english recommendation is still not done. I gave it to my my teacher two months ago.

I suggest that you call your schools and explain this. I’m not sure why you didn’t look into this sooner, but good luck! Maybe they will permit you to send a teacher rec from another subject area or a former English teacher?

Argh! I have to send my essays in tomorrow, and I don’t know where my rec’s are. I’m kind of freaking out, but I decided to apply on like Monday.

Send polite email or letter explaining the urgency of this, and apologize for the inconvenient timing, but politely beg them to send it the next day email or even offer to pick up, with your parents…
