I have a problem, kinda. On the Exeter Essay, it says that your essay should be between 200-400 words. Mine is 967 words. Is that okay? Or should I rewrite it to be shorter? Thanks in advanced.

Please! I really need to know this!

um…if they tell you the essay has to be 200-400 words, they seriously mean that. They intentionally make it that short because they want to see a clear and concise essay. (imagine yourself reading a couple hundred essays…you want them to be short) Don’t worry, it’s hard for everyone. I suggest you rewrite your essay so it doesn’t sound like it’s lacking too much. Just a suggestion though

Thanks PaperIdeas, just a question, are you applying to Exeter too or have you applied before? Or are you in Exeter?

PaperIdeas, can the essay be a little over the limit, say like 100 words over? Or should I keep it strictly 400? I read on another thread that it doesnt matter if its a little higher, but they were only applying to the school, so they wouldn’t really know, I guess.

I’m actually an applicant for 9th grade right now so don’t trust everything I say… but if you have to go over, don’t go over by too much. Most schools have an online application where they strictly limit the number of words you can type. Exeter’s the only school I’m applying to that requires a mailed in essay. So if you’re applying elsewhere, you might as well get used to the word limit. Half the challenge of the essay for me is fitting it in the word limit. :)

Thanks, same here. At my school, they dont care how many words. It’s tough. Usually I write like 1000 word essays lol. Thanks :)

You usually write 1000 word essays? I’ve only written three decent ones above 1000, and one above 2500. @Indestructive, which essay prompts are you tackling

LeoBro, I’m doing the one where it says, “Tell us something about what you learned on your own.” and the one “Tell us about something you’re passionate about.”

oh gosh…those are the one’s I’m doing too…or at least the ones I’m trying to do. XD

Cool! What are you writing about on the “something you learned on your own” essay.

I got my original 967 word essay down to 604 words. A lot of work. Still need to do a lot more.

I’m writing on “Tell us about your neighborhood and how it has shaped you” and I think I’ll do the last one, the topic I am passionate about. I’m taking them one at a time. Just a couple hundred more words to kill on your essay :p

Yep. But still it’s hard. Down to 584 words now.
