Hey guys! I'm new to posting but have been browsing for a while so I decided to start off my first post with something I know a lot about. Ask me anything you would like about the school, classes, student life, I'm here to answer! I'm a rising female senior at Exeter, and I have been attending the school ever since my freshman year.

What are the dorms like? I’m a bit dorm-crazed.

The dorms range slightly but are generally the same, except the houses which are basically smaller versions of dorms with about 8-15 people in them. All come with common rooms and kitchens. But some are newer than others, such as newly renovated. The newly renovated dorms will have nicer flooring, better windows, etc. The big difference in the dorms though is the sizes of the rooms, some have more variety while others may not. A good dorm will have a large range of big to small rooms of different styles and you will catch a few of those dorms on campus. When it comes to dorm life, it is basically your home away from home. Most student stay in the same dorm their whole time at Exeter and their dormmates become their family. They’re the first people you meet, spend time with, and become friends with. The faculty and proctors become your surrogate parents. The great thing about Exeter is that you have all different grades in a dorm so the seniors kind of become like older siblings to the younger kids. No matter how much Exeter may end up frustrating you at times, your dorm is always there for you at the end of the day.

Around how many people transfer to Exeter as uppers? Would the transition be difficult socially and in other aspects?

Do many teachers have you bring textbooks to school? Will students be carrying large amounts of textbooks? I’m looking at purchasing a backpack, and I’m wondering what I’ll need. Also, the desk chairs that come with the room, are they comfortable? Should I consider bringing my own?

I went to Exeter last year, but I was wondering how people get couches in on registration day, because I didn’t have a couch last year? Also, what shoes will people be wearing this year…I can’t decide what shoes to get!

I think around 30 people transfer to Exeter as uppers, but I could give you a better answer when Lionlinks is up. You should search the site for threads on transferring to boarding school as an upper (junior), because I know there are already posts on the subject. In general, people say that upper year is the most difficult year to transfer in, but I think it is definitely still worthwhile.

Yeah, teachers make you bring textbooks to class. You probably won’t have many big ones, though. You’ll probably get a big book for your science, a thinner book for your language, a folder of problems for math, and a bunch of smaller novels and such for the rest of classes. You might consider having room in you backpack for binders.

As far as I know, the desk chairs are wooden. They are not super comfortable, so if you have the means, you might want to bring your own.

I think it is so cool of you to offer your experience to us outside people who are dying to know more!

Here are my questions:
- What were the essay questions in the Exeter Applications?
- What were you asked in the interview?
- Was the social transition easy? Such as, was it difficult to make new friends?
- What are your fellow classmates like?
- Any tips for those of us trying to get accepted in Fall 2012?

Thank you! Also, congratulations on being accepted into Exeter!
