I did not attend summer school at Exeter, but I was admitted as a lower for the 2012-2013 year. (:

My D did go to summer school and she got in. She knows of 3 others from summer school that got in. The summer school was a wonderful experience.

My son did not apply to Exeter, but he was accepted at 3 very competitive schools (Groton, Hotchkiss, and St. Paul’s) and placed on the wait list at Deerfield. He attended the summer program at Exeter last summer and absolutely loved it. He was in the younger group for 7th/8th grade kids, called “Access Exeter.” The kids were bright, the classes were fun and interesting with great themes that tied the 3 classes into a cluster. He did a soccer program that was run by an outside entity while he was there, so it was extra $$$ but the kids who participated in it were all at the Exeter summer program and were a very multi-cultural group. It was a great 5 weeks. In his opinion it just flew by, and he met people from all over the world. Many of the kids went on to apply to Exeter, and I would say they’ve had mixed results (although many are on the waiting list and may gain admission eventually).

I don’t know if attending the Exeter summer program helped him, but it very well might have. At the very least, it shows the admissions officers that you have tried out being away from home for an extended stretch of time, that you weren’t desperately homesick, that you were up for the academics, that you enjoy meeting kids from all over the world, etc. I would think it would be much easier for them to accept someone they know has done a program like this. We live in the Midwest, so we aren’t in striking distance. It is that much more important to know the student won’t be homesick, etc.
