Exeter :)

hey ppl,
any info about exeter?
dorms,
academic life,
social life,
students,
teachers,
grades,
college placement??

anything or everything you know bout exeter please!
lol, i just wanna grip on what to expect next year. :)

I am also interested in applying to exeter. i want to know what its like there and how it is compared to hotchkiss, andover, and choate. What are the pros and cons? i would like to here especially from someone who attends or has attended exeter.

Hey shikashake, I went to Exeter. I was a day student but often stayed int the dorms. Overall, I'd say...they are great...much better than almost all college housing I have seen. Dorms definitely do have personalities and are essentially little families. They try to place in a dorm that will match your personality. If you do have a problem with it, people have been known to switch. I'll be honest, the academic life is rigorous but VERY rewarding. If you are a perfectionist you're going to need to learn to relax. I go went to a top LAC and transferred to an Ivy and Exeter is still by far and away the BEST education I've ever had. You learn to communicate verbally and in writing and you'll be EXTREMELY prepared for college. Maybe too much so. My social life was based around my sports teams and my friends from orchestra. I made friends in class too. I can't speak too much for dorm social life...but things can get intense as you are with living with those people all the time. I love the students. So diverse and best of all...they have a sense of HUMOR. It's okay to be a little un-PC from my experience. Teachers care about students like they are their own children. Totally amazing. I still go and visit. Grading is HARD...you work for every point. That's no lie. College placement...lol...I don't really know what to say about that. Colleges certainly look at your app a certain way if you are and Exeter grad. Can be good/can be bad. My one complaint is that many students develop ridiculous obssessions with college and feel like theyll die if they didnt get into Princeton. But college is a long way off...enjoy the time you have at exeter. It's hard but worth it. I wouldn't have had it any other way and I feel like a lot of my friends feel that way too. Youll make friends for life there. I can't say that about my college experience so far.

I wish I could help you with comparing schools...I only have really jaded views about those schools that stem from field hockey/lax rivalries.
as for pros and cons with exeter...see above...the only con is I didn't have a traditional highschool experience. I feel like I went to college in highschool and there were some stressful nights.
Feel free to ask whatever you want!

decision2make, thanks for the info. One question I do have is if you like the band and sports, can you do them in the same season? How many classes did you usually have in one day? And what is the size of most dorms(small, medium, large)?

As for the band/music thing....I played the harp...so I was intermittenly in and out of orchestra and chamber music...you can also take private lessons which I always did with sports...there are lots of opportunities. It can get hectic but you can definitely manage sports/music though many people seem to lean to one or the other.
You will have 5 classes each day. As an upper classman you can only take 4 2 semesters during your time at EX (I think)...This is known as music op and happens once you gain enough 1/3 of a credits to fill a whole one. A typical day can range from 3 on MTThF to 5 (most often 4 or 5). Wed and Sat half days can be as few as 1 or as many as 4...totally depends on your schedulae and your year I'd say. The dorms as compared with college seem smallish I can't speak to that exactly but I'd guess the houses (where some upper classmen live) have about 12 while dorms range from many 45-75ish.

how do u think exeter compares to andover? What does andover have that exeter doesn't and vise versa?

can some people give more info that they know about exeter

Hey...I don't really think I can compare to Exeter to Andover. I've been in an environment that's completely biased against Andover because they're our traditional rivals...so I've never really gotten the truth about life at Andover. From the Exeter end Andover has always been seen as a jock school...it's not fair of me to judge, though.

Yeah, no one that goes to Exeter can really make a valid comparison of the school to Andover. The same could be said of us Andover students toward Exeter. From orientation, we're bred to "dislike" the other school, so our views have become very biased.

People at Andover like to hype up how much of a better time people have at Andover than Exeter and typecast the Exies as "nerdy" people without social lives. However, it's just a rivalry driven stereotype.

What type of stereotype do Exeter students think Andover kids have?

Too much N00B. ;)

See, this is why I didn't even originally look into Exeter that much. I talked to Andover kids too often. They were my #1 source of BS info.

Well said bigblue09...totally. We see andover as jocks with beamers...we also enjoy making fun of the fact that Mr. Bush went there. I must say...you guys did have the best EX/Andover (or you would prob. call it Andover/EX) prank...unleashing a blue cat and 12 red mice in our library...sweet. I still want to know if it's true.

What does Exeter have that Andover doesn't and viva versa?

Okay, do you mean facilities-wise or something? Because they're comprable...I think you need to decide which fits your personality.

any ways you can think of comparing them

"What does Exeter have that Andover doesn't and viva versa?"

andover has a big-ass library but exeter has a bigger-ass library, hence exeter's library has a bigger butt :p

lol that was good

"hence exeter's library has a bigger butt"

haha. cue annoying Sir Mix-a-Lot track.

But really, I don't think that comparing Andover/Exeter facilities are going to make your decision any easier. The schools are similar-looking, heck their football stadiums even have the same names (Phelps Stadium). It really comes down to a decision where you decide whether you feel more comfortable at Andover or Exeter. This can only be decided if you visit both schools - one of them will probably feel "right" to you.

RE: the nerd stereotype at Exeter.

I don't think it's necessarily fair to type-cast Exeter as the nerdier school, I think all Andover students will agree that the Big Blue grind burns you out quickly enough. Look at all the Seniors, they stopped working two months ago. But yeah, I wouldn't know the Exeter stand-point. I bet the Saturday classes don't help, for example.
