@confusedteen15…UMinn doesn’t do ED or EA, they’re strictly rolling admissions. They do have a priority deadline of Dec 15th for admissions application and scholarship consideration, so if you submit prior to that date your chances of both are somewhat higher.

Since it’s rolling admissions you could get your decision at any time. Usually the stronger applications packages see relatively quick turnaround times, but sometimes students have to wait a few months. Good Luck!!

I’ve asked a few UMN administrative people (admissions, PSEO, honors, local rep, etc) and they have consistently said that they aren’t going to review applications until October and not to expect to hear anything until November. I know they used to let you know earlier if you applied early. I think they’ve gotten more applications over time, so they are taking longer - at least that’s what one of the admissions ppl told me. They have an earlier “priority deadline” for PSEO students (S is doing PSEO this year) - Oct 15 - and then the regular priority deadline of Dec 15, but UMN is indeed rolling admissions. My son applied this past summer so he is still anxiously waiting too. Good luck!

S logged onto his account yesterday and found that he had already been accepted. I think he put the application in maybe 2 weeks ago. It was CSE.

Random question: does anyone have any idea if the Application Tracker is updated throughout the day, or is it just an overnight update type of thing? For another institution no decision was listed in the morning, but later in the afternoon the admittance was posted.

S said at noon today tracker said application is complete, etc. And 2 hours later changed to say ‘being very carefully considered.’ So they must update at random times.

CSE, OOS WI, but we get tuition reciprocity, so don’t know if that is really OOS or not for admission consideration.

I know that my girlfriend finished her application around sept 10 to CBS from in-state.

Still no word, she is hoping for next week I guess? Surprised as to why people who have applied later than her are getting word back already

I also know that it does update periodically throughout the day. She checks twice a day and sometimes the update is in the morning and sometimes in the evening for things being added to her file

My son got his acceptance letter yesterday from U of M! We are in state(actually a suburb of Minneapolis). We can’t remember the exact date but it was very late August that he sent in the application. Good luck to everyone!

Just checked my tracker and it changed to being carefully considered. Looking back at previous years, hopefully I’l have my decision pretty soon. I’m out of state (Illinois) and my application to CBS was completed in late August.

Son had complete app to CSE done in July. Tracker just changed to the “carefully considered” msg yesterday. I get that different colleges may have a different timeline and that hearing anything may depend on when app is complete. I don’t understand how they do things there. Son was still getting postcards inviting him to apply or come for a campus tour after he had already completed the application and made a few visits there. He also got reminders to complete his application after it was complete and he called to double check that it was indeed complete. It may be fruitless to look for rhyme or reason to it all? We’re in state.

Bobbeh, what were your stats? I applied late August too, however it was for the college of liberal arts/nursing school, and mine has yet to change.

Does anyone know if the status on Application Tracker actually DOES change when they start looking at your application? D’s status went from “Decisions made on a rolling basis beginning in Nov.” to “Decisions made on a rolling basis beginning in Oct.” to the most recent: “Decision by the end of February” (no mention of a rolling decision at all). Sounds like she got back-burnered but perhaps I’m reading too much into it. Could it be that “rolling admissions” applies to some applications and not to others? She applied end of Aug. and her test scores and transcripts were in by Mid Sept.

S’s status changed this morning from ‘being carefully considered’ to admitted. CSE. Applied early August. He is NMSF, so not sure if that makes a difference in processing time, since they have special scholarships for NMF. I said already in an earlier post, we’re in WI, tuition reciprocity state. His decision came within a couple of days of when D got hers 2 years ago (also CSE), though she applied much later, maybe mid-Sept.

I wasn’t sure if I was imagining that for awhile it said November and then changed to October, but as someone else is reporting it, that must be the case. Maybe they anticipated more time might be needed to start rolling out decisions and found they could begin much earlier. October was the time 2 years ago. Too bad about the ‘decision by end of Feb.’ Maybe you should call and ask what’s up with that.

D’s status also changed from decisions beginning in November to beginning in October (this occurred during the first week in October, actually). She submitted her application to CLA/Nursing in July, and we’re still stuck on that screen. We live in Illinois, and another nursing program placed her on their deferred list until Nursing had made their determination, but she was admitted about a week later. Since UMN places many/most pre-nursing majors in CLA, I’m wondering if it takes longer because they are considered twice?

Thanks @celesteroberts I just might. And yes the status definitely changed from Nov. to Oct. around the time that people started reporting that applications were being reviewed. She has since been moved to a rather “generic” status, I think, but it may not be all bad news because it looks so far like they are providing decisions currently to the obvious admits. I expect her number will come up later in the fall or early 2015. I haven’t seen anyone admitted to CLA with similar or slightly better stats yet - perhaps some of us are “rolling” along more slowly than others LOL. Congratulations to your S by the way! Hope he gets a good scholarship.

A reflection (FWIW): It’s quite possible that U of MN isn’t as straightforward as other schools who admit off an admission index formula. If they are indeed looking at the entire application like they say they are - and not merely stats - then I can envision a scenario in which some who meet obvious criteria are admitted right away, even if they happened to apply later than another, less obvious candidate. That doesn’t mean the latter won’t be admitted - it just may take longer because all the “obvious” ones are going to leapfrog over them. In this scenario it still makes sense to apply as early as possible because with a rolling decision process the order should matter, all else equal. No inside knowledge here - just a rumination LOL (very appropriate word choice!). Someone is welcome to correct me.

I’m sure you are right. Earlier is better. If you wait until the deadline to apply when they are swamped and you have average stats, then you will definitely be waiting until Feb. for a decision. Now, since you got app in early, you might not hear the first week decisions are released, but it should be long before Feb. Even top stat students might not get admitted immediately if they wait until deadline to apply. The way to take advantage of rolling admissions policy is to apply as early as possible. Good luck. Are you fairly confident of admission? S has friends who I think may not get into their school of choice and probably will be put in CLA who are waiting anxiously.
