@celesteroberts my D has a few things going for her: 1) she applied to CLA and CDes (she’s art and design) so while she may be backburnered for a bit w/r/t CLA we are fairly confident that her stats are good enough to get her into one of these colleges (assuming that the overall stats don’t change drastically this year). Her application will be one that has to be read carefully - while her ACT is very high, her GPA is right below where it needs to be for a solid admit but her transcripts show an upward trend; 2) she has already been admitted to another comparable state school and is very likely to receive merit aid from them once she gets her grades up a bit more. So far she’s missed the scholarship mark by .04 but they look at final grades to determine merit aid and she has a very high chance of closing the gap by the end of this semester; 3) she has at least one private school application that has a high probably of significant merit aid, thankfully. It may well turn out that she’s a better fit at a more expensive, highly ranked school and that’s ok with us if the merit aid is enough to offset some of the additional cost. UMTC is an excellent school - we are proud to call it our local university! But it may not be the best fit for the quirky artsy type who comes into her own by a non-conventional path For this reason it has never been her “top” choice of a school but she still wants it for a “safety” - LOL it may turn out to be less safe than some of her other choices.

Submitted my app early August and have yet to see a change from the generic “Applications reviewed on a rolling basis starting in October” message in tracker. In state, CBS, and 2 year PSEO program member.

Son applied 9.13 received decision on 10.13. Accepted: CSE. Status changed on 10.10 to “You application is being very carefully considered.” On 10.13, indicated that he was accepted.

Sent my application in on the 19th of Sept. for CBS. No change on the application status so far, but I hope I get my decision soon! Looks to me like the applicants with the near “perfect” stats are the first ones to receive their decision; makes sense.

Similar story as kooth12 above. Daughter applied 8/31/14 (with transcript arriving the following week). Received decision on 10/13/14 through application tracker. Accepted: CSE. Status changed on 10/10/14 to “Your application is being very carefully considered.”

D (3.5+,SAT 2100+, 750M) applied OOS on about 9/1/12 to Science and Engineering only. Was admitted to College of Liberal Arts 12/24/12 with no mention of Science and Engineering at all, just congratulations. She had sent an email to cancel the application because of ED acceptance to another school, but I guess it crossed in the mail. Called in attempt to get application fee refunded thinking that due to clerical error, they didn’t even process her application correctly, and she was going to another school anyway. They told us that since she was actually waitlisted to Science and Engineering, and THEY decided that she was better suited for liberal arts. Could be because she listed ChemE as intended major even though they don’t admit to majors anyway. I prefer to think that rather than believe that she should do liberal arts because she’s a girl. A clear waitlist letter would have been preferable.

Huh?

@ClassicRockerDad I’ve heard from other people too that the U does this. Perhaps they like having those high ACT/SAT’s as part of their stats? Clearly a 2100 admitted to CLA looks very good for them - even if the student doesn’t actually matriculate. It’s not a nice thought but certainly a rational one :)

Yeah, UMN admits kids to CLA instead if they aren’t going to be admitted into bio, business or CSE, but have good enough stats for CLA, and puts them on waitlist for the college to which they actually applied. Other schools do something similar. UIUC has a special college they put kids into. They figure some kids might want to attend anyway and try to do well and transfer into the other college eventually.

Of course your D’s SAT is very good, but I think the GPA might be a little low for CSE.

If you look at the admitted student profile, they don’t list GPA, but they do list class rank. In CSE 83% are in top 10%. Our HS doesn’t rank, but in fact the top 10% are 3.98+. That is, no more than one B in 9-11. A lot of kids here apply to UMN because of the reciprocity. But CSE is getting more and more difficult to get admitted to. Used to be kids used UMN as a safety because getting into UW-Madison was hard. CLA may still be easier to get into than UW, but I don’t know that that is true of the other UMN colleges

D got into Wisconsin-Madison Engineering in early December that year. It was the first admission.

Nvr mind

I submitted my application to CSE on August 18th and sent my transcripts a few weeks later. I’m OOS and think I have pretty good stats (2030 SAT, 4.5W and 3.9UW GPA & good ec’s), but on the application tracker it still says “applications being reviewed on a rolling basis.” Should I be worried?

You dont need to worry. Give it some time. I’ve been worrying too as I haven’t received a decision yet, but I’m sure it’ll come soon. fingers crossed Hope you and I get a response soon

Yes! Good luck

The tracker yesterday indicated my son’s acceptance into Carlson. He applied around Labor Day. We are in-state, in Twin Cities suburb.

Tracker still says “rolling admissions will begin in October . . .” but received a letter at home yesterday suggesting sharing the application with the other campuses. May be reading too much into it, but that didn’t seem like a great sign.

The Admissions dept. explains on their website somewhere that once the applicant submits the completed application he/she, within a certain period of time, receive a letter acknowledging the application as well as an invitation to consider one of the other campuses. So it sounds like a default response. But it does make you wonder if any of the automatic admits who have posted here did indeed get the same letter. Why would Admissions waste the paper? In my D’s case, she received that letter as well and her tracker status changed from “rolling beginning in October” to “you’ll hear from us by the end of Feb.” shortly afterward. My guess is that first round admission decisions are basically for Honors College, scholarships, etc. and therefore won’t include invites to other campuses.

Everyone gets that letter. We got it too and already admitted. Don’t worry. It’s still the first week they are admitting. Lots of time still.

@2inCollegeSoon, that letter about sharing apps with other campuses is not a bad sign. My son received that too (I’m sure all do) and he was accepted a couple days later.

OK so it truly is a default response. That’s good to know. Delighted to be corrected on this.

I think the point of the letter is to let people know there is no additional fee to apply to other campuses in case they are interested. I’ve heard UMN-Morris has a small LAC environment and if you haven’t had time to do visits yet to determine best fit, it’s an easy way to get a LAC option for no additional charge and can check it out later.
