I’m still right there with ya @asthrera

same… we all seem to have around the same stats too I think

People have been telling me that acceptances and rejections arent based on how long they take, but the thing i am most concerned about is because the fact they are rolling admissions i feel like the longer they put off getting to my application the chance of me being rejected or waitlisted increases. I feel like at this rate the later they put it off they will have admitted more people and will have less space to admit me…and i just feel that is so unfair considering I applied early. I dont know, i just want my application to be considered fairly and, well, i just want it to be considered period.

@asthrera - They told me that most decisions will come in Jan and Feb if you applied before Dec 15. Of course, many people received their decisions very quickly while others are waiting (they only said “most”), and the application acknowledgement said “send your transcripts asap for fastest decision”, so it was kind of contradictory that they want to look at all those applied before Dec 15 to announce most decisions. Anyway, calling them and clarifying all this will help you get some peace.

The whole expedited Golden Gopher application seems to be counterproductive. When it received my son’s ACT and AP scores, Minnesota invited him to apply, which he eagerly did in September, the first college he applied to. He was pretty excited about Minnesota back then. Since then he applied to eight other schools, four public and four private. He has been accepted to four of them and we expect to receive admission letters from two more between now and Christmas. He is starting to turn against Minnesota, as am I. Why bother to encourage early, easy applications, if there is no intent to act on them for four months? This makes Minnesota look like an inefficient bureaucracy and cools initial excitement about the school, especially when other schools (some even bigger than Minnesota) can make quicker decisions and show my son that they want him.

Other schools have early action dates (apply by November 1 and hear back by 12/15). Other schools have rolling admissions (apply and you should hear back within 8 weeks). Minnesota’s process is simply incomprehensible. They seem to be making it up as they go along.

My S feels the same. Accepted to other colleges now and pretty much forgetting about MN. Haven’t heard anything for months after applying thru Gopher then getting a snail mail letter a month later saying app was received. He tried signing into gopher site again and all it says is what to do next, ie send in transcripts, etc but that was already done and received according to snail mail.

sent in app late sept, completed app on nov25, carefully considered dec. 12, heard back on dec 15. lol ironic how i got admitted on the priority deadline!

Been a little more than three months now since I sent my application. Pretty sick of UMN’s sh-- right now lol. I’ve turned my interest to other schools who have shown more interest in me than minnesota has!! Why eagerly push me into submitting the golden gopher app so early when it hasnt benefited me at all? Welp. I will most likely receive a decision in Jan or maybe February at this rate, maybe it’ll be too late by then, who knows. Good luck to everyone else

@asthrera My son pretty much feels the same way. He took the bait in September and completed the Golden Gopher application. Based on his stats, and Minnesota’s encouragement, we expected to hear back within weeks. He was really excited about Minnesota.

Since he completed the Minny app, he has applied to seven other schools: Arizona, Arizona State, Miami University (Ohio), Santa Clara, University of Portland, Trinity University (San Antonio), and Rose-Hulman. All seven have accepted him and most have already offered large merit scholarships. All are sending lots of glossy mail, and several are even calling him directly. From Minnesota … crickets.

@Mamelot It seems that admission to the honors program is decided by the end of March.

From the UMN website:

“Students who are admitted to the University Honors Program will be notified by the end of March 2014. Students whose admission applications become complete after the December 16, 2013, priority deadline are considered for Honors admission on a space-available basis. For more information, please visit http://admissions.tc.umn.edu/honors or contact the Office of Admissions at 1-800-752-1000 or 612-625-2008.”

D applied on July 9, with all materials received within a couple weeks. After literally months of waiting, her status just now changed to “your application is being carefully considered.” Since the admissions office will be closed until Monday, I’m assuming it will be late next week before we know anything. She applied to Nursing/CLA and, like others, we were thinking they were waiting to get more nursing apps in so they could compare the pool for nursing guarantee. Fingers crossed, and Merry Christmas to all!

My son applied to CLA w/Freshman Nursing Guarantee at the end of August and it finally changed to “being carefully considered” today. Maybe they’re starting to move on some of the nursing applications! I’m assuming we’ll hear soon and it will be nice to know either way. Good luck all!

My D had almost the exact opposite experience with the Golden Gopher App. She applied in Sept and got her acceptance in early October into CBS then 2 weeks later received a merit scholarship in the mail (OOS tuition difference waived). One of her top choice universities (U-Wis) has had her application now for 3 months and D is still waiting to hear. In the meantime, D is really starting to think the neuroscience major at Univ of Minn might be the best fit for her.

My status also just changed for the freshman nursing guarantee to “being carefully considered”… I feel as if all of these status changes at once is a bad sign

@heyoimsam it could also mean that Admissions is clearing out a lot of admission decisions before the Holidays. My D just received her packet from another institution and it was clearly rushed out to the mail before the break - a few typos, etc. Positive thoughts, people!!!

Status for D changed at midnight - admitted into CLA!!! Hopefully the other nursing/CLA folks on this board are getting their word, as well.

My son was admitted to CLA too! No mention of Nursing though. Is that a separate decision/ notification? Getting into CLA is great news but I was fairly confident he’d get in. The Freshman Nursing Guarantee is more competitive and a big factor in deciding if he’ll attend the U!

The CLA and Nursing Guarantee were two separate letters nearly a week apart. Good luck! This seems like a good sign!

Is there something I missed? I applied to Carlson business and it said I was accepted to CLA. Thanks!

I have heard that is what happens when you apply to one of the higher stat schools and they think your stats and rest of HS record is not what they’ll accept. They put you in CLA. After you are there for awhile, if you work hard and get good grades, you apply to transfer into Carlson or CSE or whatever and a major there. You apply to get into the major sophomore year.

But if your record is very good, it could be a mistake. Call admissions and ask.
