If you have been accepted to a combined BS-MD program, could you please list how many hours of physician shadowing you had on your application? It has been like pulling teeth to find physicians to shadow (probably because of HIPPA regulations). Can you guess the minimum hours of physician shadowing that admissions officers expect at most combined BS-MD programs (assuming zero hours of hospital volunteering and an otherwise excellent application)? Thanks for your help!

I had 125 hrs

The number of hours admissions officers expect–0. Shadowing might be viewed as evidence of genuine interest in medicine but is not as important as academic achievement and meaningful involvement in community service.

If you already have excellent evidence of academic achievement (GPA, test scores, research awards etc.), then I am wondering how many hours would be needed to demonstrate that you have been exposed to the medical field enough to know what you are getting into.

i had zero hours of shadowing, less than 20 hours of community service total, accepted into northwestern hpme.

ad com member = zero hours needed and sometimes “better”
