Expensive...

Hello,
I am a high school junior, and I am looking at attending RICE... but I was told by a friend "whose parents are both lawyers", that she was unable to attend RICE, because of the cost.... Is it THAT expensive?... For all of you attending RICE, or looking to attend RICE... Why RICE?... OH YEA!.. i am unsure of my major..will that affect me my first couple of years of college?

Thanx!
P.S.,
What do ya'll think about Texas-Tech..

When compared to other schools of Rice's caliber, like Northwestern, Duke, and the like, Rice is an incredible bargain. It's a ridiculously inexpensive private university. UT and Texas Tech and A&M are state schools and are partially supported by state funds, so they're going to be cheaper. State schools are, in general, much more inexpensive than private schools.

I wanted to go to Rice because I felt that it was the best fit for me. I was a strong student in science and math but wanted a well-rounded, small university in an urban environment. I wanted a university where the students weren't so focused on their academics that they wouldn't have an outside life, where the students would have interesting personalities, and where there wasn't any of the cut-throat competition that there sometimes was at other schools.

If you have any other questions, don't hesitate to ask!

Cost of attending Rice for 05-06 is about $36,000. Every year the prices go up. This year the tuition went up by 12%. Other Rice caliber schools are about $42,000-45,000/year.

I am impressed by Rice's price, especially because of the caliber of the school and it's uniqueness. But my parents will still have a tough time paying $36,000, and they won't be qualifying for need-based aid (Let's just say airline pilots just got a 40% paycut and we haven't sold our house to move to a smaller one yet). Is there a lot of grant money available for Rice students? Thank you

The 05-06 price is not 36,000; it's actually exactly 32,726 for tuition, room & board, and fees.

I suppose you will not buy any books or have any other expenses.

Rice is only a good deal if you're rich enough to qualify for financial aid. In my experience, their aid is no better than that of comparable private schools, and was, in fact, meager enough that I was unable to attend. :(

Rice offers generous merit aid to the top students, making it very affordable.

My D got a merit award, which was unexpected. It isn't huge, but it helps. She is entering junior year.

Does anyone know when these will be sent out?

i got off the priority waitlist last week..and today i got a call from the financial aid office...i got a HUGE financial aid package...comes down to about 3700 parent contribution and 1700 fed subs. loan. its definitely not true that rice is too expensive. for its calibur 35k is a really good price..plus they are really generous, as you can see. im enrolled in cornell right now, and i'm having to pay about 10k more in loans, work study, summer savings and parent contribution... i was bent on going there but now i'm not so sure...
