Experience/information about honors colleges at southern universities?

I wonder if the OP has come back and read any of these posts?

Thanks for all of the information. I don’t know if South Carolina is on their radar but I did not know how strong their honors college is.

As for specific interests, my sense is that he is most likely interested in engineering although pre-med gets tossed around too. My guess is that he will take the introductory courses and hopefully find a particular passion.

And I did not mean to imply that they (or I, or anyone) was assuming that he would get in. In fact, that’s why they are looking for more options, to increase the chances of a good outcome.

For science and pre-med, I’d strong second the suggestion above that he look at UA-Birmingham. Excellent program with really excellent, supportive program for honors students!

i’ll chime in with UAB especially if you child is a science student. UAB has 4 signature honors programs and a general college program. the sci/tech honors is the one i am most familiar with. you can apply after acceptance…it will require a short essay and an interview. it accepts about 50-60 students per year, that have a strong wish to pursue research or stem professions. it is a coherent group that will work together over the 4 years, providing retreats, special courses (ie public speaking for scientific presentations) and requires a thesis based on research done while at uab. my son has been doing research since his first semester there. Dr Tucker who runs the program is excellent!! there are chem/bio/bioengineering/math/engineering/ physics and other majors in the program. UAB also has honors tracks for your specific major, and a lot of the stem type majors have a 5th year track a well for masters.

when we went through the college app process, i didnt find a common ground for southern honors programs… some were solely stats driven with automatic acceptance. you got to take honors courses, but they were not specific, and you might never see the same students again. some had requirements for how many courses you took, some said you didnt have to take any.

dont have a chance right now to read the whole thread…but depending on his stats, they have automatic merit aid, full ride national merit /achievement/ hispanic scholarships as well

if you would like more info feel free to pm

that should have been 4 signature and a general HONORS program
