Slots, tips, supported and likely letters. Can someone define, place value on these offerings all in the context of the recruited athletes journey through the process ?

Likely letter in the Ivy League means you are in. Only rescinded for major academic or character issues (cheating, etc). At H there are ~300 athletes in this years incoming freshman class to whom ~200 likely letters were issued. Similar number at other Ivies I believe. Yale has been reducing the number of LLs given to athletes. LL’s are issued by admissions.

The terms ‘slot’, ‘tip’ and ‘supported’ are a little more vague. In a d3 situation, I believe a ‘slot’ carries more weight than a ‘tip’, and ‘supported’ means as much as the coach wants it to mean.

If you are a slotted athlete at HYP and the coach recommends you for a Likely Letter to admissions , does this usually happen ?

In all likelihood the coach will have a preliminary green light from admissions before putting you up for a LL, so yes, the LL usually comes through.

D just finished the application process and coach has stated h/s will use the slot on her and go for the LL . D has great anxiety (dad) also , hoping all goes well while she waits.

After two years this whole recruiting process comes done to the granting of this LL…all the travel, pactices, games…I feel like a pie crust ! Looking back, the time spent with my daughter…I wouldn’t change a thing and am grateful to have experienced such a journey.

That’s great, Charter - congrats to all. The wait for the LL can be agonizing, but it sounds like things are falling into place!

In all likelihood, the LL will come through. However, if it does not, there’s still time for plan B. Just make sure that she gets an answer early enough, should the LL not be forthcoming. Did the coach give you a timeline by when to expect an answer?

She should hear early this week. The downside to all this is …this is all she is focusing on, not the best approach when she is carrying five AP’s.

The good news is, once the LL comes and the apps are done…the second half of the semester and all spring semester is straight academics and Sr fun.
Our student carried 6 APs Sr yr and after the big weight of the LL was done in Oct…kiddo was a happy bird all the rest of the year.

Congrats

Fog2: ^ that thought is the only thing keeping my D afloat right now. She is drowning with all the AP work, her fall sport, 4 overnights, and volunteer commitments at school. Of course now her friends are angry with her for disengaging. If she can just survive the next two weeks we will all enjoy sr. fun!

BTW: Thank god SAT testing was complete Junior year ----it would have been impossible to add that to the mix now. Parents of juniors take heed.

Varska and all the sage contributors on CC. My D recieved a phone call last night from her coach letting her know her application is approved an a “likely Letter” is in the mail. WOW! WOW! WOW! Thank you all sooooooooo much!!!

CONGRATULATIONS!!!
Be sure to take a pic when that letter comes and she opens it…

YouR DDs Sr yr will be more pleasant as she now can focus on the APs,and enjoy the learning for learnings sake…No more essays and apps to do…

And all done before you smell the turkey!
We were there this time last year and it was a beautiful thing when that lovely envelope arrived!

CONGRATS!!

The likely letter is a very cool thing.
Congratulations.
Take pictures, make copies, frame it!
Not only done before turkey … but done before jack o’lanterns!
Awesome – it’s a great feeling!

What a great feeling - congrats Charter and daughter!

Congratulations charter and daughter! “One and done!” is the best holiday gift of all. Enjoy!

Congrats Charter!!! That is HUGE! Wishing the best for your daughter in the future!!

Daughter just received the LL in the mail ,caught it on film. UNBELIVABLE!!! this one moment takes away all the anxiety and worry all of us go through. All on CC keep the faith and listen to the advise that flows through this forum…it truely is a beacon in the dark!

WOOOOOOO! How nice! Great job!

Congratulations all around!
