I'm living in unit 1 next year, and I am a bit concerned about the unit bathrooms. I was out of time, so I could not attend CalSo, but during Cal Day, I took a very brief tour of the bathrooms in unit 2 and unit 3.

They seemed alright, I guess, and I hear they are cleaned every day? But the bathrooms in my high school were cleaned every day and they always became quite disgusting by the end of the day.

I am also very uncomfortable with the co-ed bathrooms. I am a guy, I think it will be very awkward overall for both the guys and girls, and I know technically people should mind their own business, but still I feel it will be very awkward if say, I decide to shave my facial hair near the sinks, and a girl happens to wash her hands right next to me.

In addition, how clean exactly are the toilets? I rarely, rarely have used public bathrooms for number 2. Would you guys always recommend putting toilet covers, or covering the seat with toilet paper prior to sitting down?

Thanks

They generally stay pretty clean. The exceptions are, perhaps, party nights, but messes are always cleaned up very quickly, and usually by the next day.

The co-ed part is not as awkward as it may seem at first. The shaving situation you described happens all the time, and no one has a problem with it, or thinks it is weird.

Toilets are usually segregated into “sitting” and “standing” stalls. The standing stalls can get dirty for obvious reasons, but you wouldn’t be going #2 in those stalls, anyway. The sitting stalls stay fairly clean. There’s really no need to cover the toilet seats unless you’re really germophobic.

There were no standing stills when I lived in Unit 2…

If you feel uncomftorable shaving in the sink, why not bring a small shower mirror and shave real quick while showering?

aureateagle, you’re a pretty disgusting dude.

It’s awkward in the beginning, but it becomes a non-issue within two weeks max. Guaranteed.

Do the walls of the bathroom stalls extend close to the ground? I want a little privacy when I do my business. Oh and what happens if someone hears your awkward noises when you are doing your thing :(. How embarassing and awkward that would be.

if by close to the ground you mean about six inches to a foot then yeah. that’s for high-rise buildings in unit one - I’ve never visited the suites. I know that some people go down to the ground floor and use the 1-person restrooms available if they’re uncomfortable with doing their thing in public. if you live close to the ground floor, that’s always an option. if you don’t, just anticipate climbing down the stairs ahead of time.

Is Freeborn one of the high rise buildings you mentioned?

steven, yes it is.

Unspoken rule, if you don’t know the gender of the person next to you in the crapper, one person leaves first, washes their hands, and peaces the scene before the other person does.

No harm, no foul.

I lived in Freeborn last year (and will be there this coming year). I heard that Freeborn bathrooms are cleaner because of the substance-free policy, so people don’t puke in our bathrooms after partying because they aren’t allowed in the building.

i love how of all the awkward things that could happen in the bathroom, you choose shaving and having a girl wash her hands next to you. I mean unless you’re shaving somewhere below the waist or something.

And bathrooms are cleaned everyday. Do your business and go. If you are too embarrassed, go to some random floor where you don’t know anyone on that floor and use their bathroom.

^ That’s a lie perpetuated by the media!

I’ll be living in Freeborn this Fall as a freshman so thank goodness for the cleaner bathrooms, then! (:
