My son has recently been accepted to Ole Miss and one of the programs that the school offers that really interests us is Fastrack. The school offers a fair amount of detail on their web site but was wondering if anyone had any first hand experience with a daughter or son that went through the program. Was it helpful? Any thoughts on the program’s strengths and weaknesses? Do the kids feel prepared to tackle sophomore year without the Factrack support? Does the program help a student identify a major?
My son did it freshman year. It was great and he had his own academic mentor that I could call if needed. He also pledged a fraternity. I would recommend it. The kids that go through it are better prepared, plus you get to pick the newer dorms.
Thanks so much for the feedback. A couple of quick follow up questions. Do you know how big the program is? I know they organize the students into groups of 20 but wondering how big the overall program is. Also, do most of the participants live in the dorm together? It sounds like your son went though the rush process at the same time. My son is interested in that as well but, as we he will be coming from Chicago-area, he probably won’t know anyone going in and is worried a bit about meeting people. Thanks again for the feedback.
not sure on the size. If you are in fastrack, you get to live in any dorm, but I think Burns and Minor hall are a lot of fasttrack kids. They live all over. Don’t worry about him meeting people, we are from Columbus OH and my sons best friends are from Boston, Little Rock, Boca Raton, St Louis, San Francisco and Chicago. He should be able to get a house he likes, kids are from all over and the friendliest you will find. I graduated from IU Bloomington and loved it, but Oxford blows away Bloomington with the restaurants, shopping and atmosphere. My daughter is headed to Ole Miss next year also.
