Experience with transfers

D has heard back from several schools with May 1 decision dates. She has another 5 or 6 that she won't heard from till later. What is the best approach? Contact the May 1st schools and ask for an extension or contact the other schools and ask if she can get her decision early? I have heard that one of the schools notifies students as late as July.
What is the policy on accepting one of the May 1st schools and sending the deposit and still wait on the other schools.

I’d say take both approaches, as schools will vary in how much leeway they will give with decisions. You can send in the deposit, some schools will refund part or all of it if she doesn’t attend, others will keep it. Transfer admissions are always scattered this way, and not all schools are accomodating, so do what you can to give her the most options.

The one thing that I wouldn’t do is deposit at 2 or more schools at one time.

I agree not to deposit at one time, but you can deposit one school, and retract it later if necessary. There are no set deadlines in transfers as in regular admissions. I would also call schools and try to get answers. When my D transfered, the school that had not answered yet was able to give us her acceptance over the phone, so she could turn down the one who wanted an answer.
