Experienced auditioners, please weigh in!

I just noticed that the audition dates are already up for next winter. Logistically, the travel to auditions seems daunting enough, but I am trying to figure out when one typically schedules these, so as to get the best airfares possible.

I notice that most schools have two dates for each audition weekend (usually a Friday and a Saturday). Do we go in on Thursday, and stay through Saturday, or wait to hear at what times the auditions actually are scheduled, and then book flights/hotels (knowing that there will be less availability and they will be more expensive)?

Son will have two auditions (classical and jazz) at each school, which complicates the scheduling further, I assume.

Thanks in advance.

Depends on the instrument and the school. D audition on clarinet. There were no call backs or prescreening at the schools she auditioned at. That being said, she ran into one of her flutist cabin mates from Interlochen during one of her auditions and she had just found out that she got a flute call back for later that day.

So in our case, it was "in the evening before and out the evening of" the audition. Only exception was Eastman where we made it in the evening two days before the audition; didn't want to tempt the Rochester, NY snow gods...

Some schools allow you to schedule your preferred audition date and time with application, other's not until after they've received your app (by sending back correspondence or email for scheduling). It's pretty specific, so check with each you're applying to.

Check the sticky thread ("Tips for Auditions") at the top of the music forum. There's lots of great info there.

My bad! Information is all there (more or less) on the sticky! Thanks, VD!
