@rjm2018 It was a stressful time and definitely what prompted me to chime in about your daughter. It was a class with a major curve as well – most of the kids would fail the exam and then get an A or a B with the curve. It didn’t make much sense to me. The only upside was the students were really close, working together to try to survive, with many group chats going on into the wee hours of the night, which meant sleep-deprived kids! If she really wants an AP science course, I strongly recommend AP bio. Good luck with those schedule decisions. She is lucky to have you thinking ahead and doing research!
I vote with the person who suggested she take AP Environmental Science over regular physics. Its a super easy AP and If she isnt into STEM, physics wont be as interesting IMO, as environmental science or biology might be. AP Bio might depend on the teacher as to how hard it may be. AP ES is an easy A and 5 if she takes the test. Also practical in todays world.
I’d also suggest a computer science course perhaps?
@Isoinfo, in hind sight, D probably could’ve squeaked by that AP Calc class with a high C or maybe even a low B (and at first she wanted to stick it out) but she felt so much info was being covered so quickly that she didn’t have time to digest it. She had always had A+’s or solid A’s in math (except for the B+ in Pre AP Trig Freshman Spring semester) so I think that class threw us both for a loop. So far, the ACP Calc is good for her and she understands the material. She’s already had several light-bulb moments where she remembered the content from AP and said she gets it now.
I’m glad your D persevered and got an A in the class too! Good for her! I think this site is a wealth of information and encouragement and I’m thankful for it. Since we just have the one, I’m trying to learn as much as I can to help us all in the end. If she can get some decent merit or scholarship dollars, then that’ll help hubby and I even more as we get closer to those retirement years. We’re not Spring chickens anymore, lol.
@runswimyoga, I asked D about ES at her school and I guess, for now, there’s some teacher upheaval with that class trying to fill in for someone that’s left. I guess the teacher now hasn’t taught it before and it’s not the easy A class that many kids were used to. This is the word she’s getting right now from people in the class. I think she’d rather take AP Bio. That might be good Sr year. I’ll ask her to look into the AP Computer class and see if the teacher is good as well.
