Where did you get in and with what sort of resumee? How were your SSAT scores? Your grades? Your after-school activities? Your awards? Your community service? Thanks!

Well I haven’t gotten in, or even really begun the applications process, but here’s my resume…

My grades are (for my 8th grade school year):
English: A
Social Studies: A+
Science: A+
Math: A+
Spanish (regents class): A+

My overall average was a 97.63 (out of 100) or a 3.91 (out of 4).

I participated in Band for the past 4 years (Elementary and Junior High), Chorus for four years also, and am continuing Band next year. I had significant roles in two drama productions in the past two years. I participated in All-County Band and Chorus for 3 years and performed NYSSMA solos for 3 years in band and two years in chorus.

I have played four seasons of volleyball, two seasons of junior high and two seasons of club (intramural). I will be continuing with JV volleyball this year and another season of club. I ran two years of junior high cross country and one year of junior high track. Last year I ran varsity track.

I am also participating in Envirathon, which is very competitive for our school, seeing as we placed in Nationals the last three years. I also participated in 4 years of Math competition, and placed 3rd (as a team) in he Elementary competition in 6th grade, and came in the Top 10 sudden death rounds in 8th grade (I eventually made it to 7th overall, out of 80 or more students from different counties). I will be auditioning for a part in a theatre production by an independent company (not through my school.)

99% SSAT scores - But take note, it’s not that important as long as you get above 90%. I got nearly a perfect score if that helps anything. (Got like 5 wrong in this really tough section with all the words and synonyms etc lol)

3.7 (I think at the very least) GPA - That’s not strong or remarkable I think (I have no idea) but I got all my As in academic subjects and I showed in my interview the reasons for why I got a B and a C and even more importantly how I learnt from them. Also a 3.7 is very strong in Australia as a lot of the nerds like me got our Bs and Cs in Art, Gym, Music, Design etc (I got mine in Design which is like building stuff and Art lol). I was first in the year and it was a top 10 Australian private school.

ECs - They came naturally to me. I had never thought ECs were important at all when I first applied to Andover let alone when I started them years ago. I did debating, mock trial and young liberals (republicans) for 4 years and I did other insignificant stuff that looked like a laundry list even though I took them casually just for fun (Like went in a play because of friends etc). But the debating and young liberals helped a lot as you’ll see later down

Interview - Best bit by far. Each school’s interview was over 1 hour and I really enjoyed them. I mentioned I enjoyed economics and politics and at first they were justifiably sceptical but then we talked about those two topics for the entire interview. The debating and young liberals showed a genuine passion in these two areas as well and I tried telling them the books I read (like Clinton’s autobiography or Freakenomics) as a youth that stimulated these passions. Interviews were the most important bits for me.

Essays - Solid to strong. For my ‘safety’ schools which were Milton and Taft (very naive as I didn’t realize how tough they were) my essays were average. Andover’s was my favorite.

Teachers Recommendations - Very poor. They portrayed me as careless, lazy and very carefree. I agree with the carefree (it’s totally changed with the realization I’m going to a very intimidating school like Andover) but I guess it wasn’t crucial for me. They were strong in general and very glowing academically but the recurring weakness in me being careless, carefree and lazy in terms of work. They liked me as a person but felt I cruised a little.

Accepted into: Andover, Exeter, SPS, Groton, Milton, Taft, Hotchkiss, Choate

SSAT - 94%

Grades - Didn’t have them, but the schools didn’t care. Instead I got “evaluations” which are a bit like recommendations in themselves.

ECs- varsity basketball (league champions), varsity track, club track, president of the environmental club, bass guitar, college level english courses, steel drum band, trinidadian carnival arts (marched in SF carnival), model UN, musical theatre, soup kitchen work, film-making.

Interviews - Went very well, except for at Thacher. I was very nervous for that one. They enjoyed talking about the documentary I made about poverty, and the volunteer work I’ve done.

Essays - They were alright, I probably could have done better.

Recommendations - I have to say very excellent. I was well liked by my teachers, especially my English teachers.

Accepted into: NMH, Putney, Brentwood College, Shawnigan Lake
Applied to: NMH, Putney, Brentwood College, Shawnigan Lake, Thacher (rejected) Lick-Wilmerding (waitlisted).

I really haven’t started working on applications either, but here’s what I have so far:

SSAT- haven’t taken them, but in 7th grade I did once and got a 98th percentile

Grades-
French: A
English: A
Science: A
Social Studies: A
Math: A+

EC’s- Vice President of School, got discounts at various restaurants near school for students, organized various fundraisers that totaled $10,000, book drives, coat drives, food drives, coat drives… you know what I mean, haha. I dance 8 hrs a week: ballet, pointe, jazz, tap, and modern. I’m on the speech team and I’ve placed 4th honors, 2nd honors, and 1st honors at tournaments. I play the piano 8.5 hrs a week, at National Guild Auditions I have placed in the top-talent circle (highest rank). I teach Chinese kids English during the summer and do martial arts and tai chi (practice 18 hrs a week for 2 months), which at international competitions have placed 1st three times (does 6th grade count??). I do musical theatre, most recent Patty Simcox from Grease, and Maria from West Side Story. I volunteer at the nursing home 1 hr per week, and children’s hopital 1 hr a week. I’m on the Yearbook Club and the school’s newspaper, aiming for layout editor or photographer for both. I can’t think of anything else at the moment…

Essays- haven’t started

Teacher Recs- none yet

Accepted into- I don’t know… hopefully Andover or Exeter

By the way, what are my chances???

Wow. You guys seem to have a lot of stuff going on! Are any of you applying for financial aid? I have a friend that I’m trying to convince to apply, but she thinks she won’t get in because she can’t afford it. So I’m trying to find some examples and stuff.
Any help would really be appreciated.

im sorry but i think its hilarious that in australia the republicans are called liberals :p

Saer got into Choate, NMH, and Exeter. thingslost got into Andover and Exeter. shore attends Andover.

Instead of letter grades, maybe the teachers gave out evaluations (which seem much better.)

Impressive, shore.
