I am considering a CTY summer camp for DS 11. I realize this is a bit OT here, but I want to know if it is a valuable experience for kids who more than moderately gifted. Have any of you CCers gone to CTY camp? I am particularly interested in hearing about the math and science courses.

I went!
The camp is SO much fun. you meet the most amazing people, the campuses are for the most part really nice, and you just have a great time. However, even though it's a well known camp for gifted students, the classes don't relaly offer much of a valuable experience, and I don't think the camp is prestigious enough to make a bold statement on any college application.
but back on the other hand, if you're looking to have a good and fairly educational time this summer, GO. it's a LOT of fun.

cty was the most fun i ever had
i took went 4 years, took 3 math classes and a science class
i don't really remember much of what i learned anyway
but it did give me some knowledge that helped with my math classes at school
and i was able to skip chem because i took it there
i would recommend taking game theory or number theory
the classes are somewhat educational, it really depends which class you take, and how much effort you're willing to put in
do not take math modeling, it's way too easy
if you want to have fun, go to cty
if you want to learn A LOT and take a very challenging class, look into other programs
you will definitely get some knowledge out of it, though, but the focus is socializing

My son is just 11, and though he may dabble in a college course or two in the next year, he is not focused on the prestige factor right now.

He really wants a group learning experience with other HG + kids close to his own age. He is most interested in math and science.

I was looking at the individually paced math sequence, and it sounds very good, but do the kids in that class do any group learning? He's taken algebra and geometry but not algebra II.

If anyone has any suggestions for specific courses at CTY or even at other camps, please let me know. I appreciate the feedback and it appears that most kids who attend CTY have positive things to say about it.

he probably wouldn't like IPMS - you just sit there with a book and teach yourself, and it's not college material
if he wants to skip a year in math, though, IPMS will help
but if he wants to take an interesting class, I would recommend Number Theory, Game Theory, or Cryptography
there are also some interesting science classes like Neuroscience but I've never taken those.

My kids have not done CTY summer classes, but if your son wants the experience for the social benefits, I would think the individually-paced math class would be one of his last choices. There are so many ways to do math at your own pace at home. Why not do something really hands-on with a group of other smart kids? Someone who's done the class mught write and tell you that there is a lot of interaction with others both during and outside class, in which case, ignore everything I wrote :), but I'd be worried that that class would be more isolating than the others offered.

yeah, from what i've heard you work completely alone IPMS
the only reason people take it is to skip grades
it isnt very interesting material, and if he doesn't skip a grade he'll be learning it all over again in school
but if he did take it he would still have fun outside of class
cty is a fun camp no matter what class you take

Yeah, I wondered if that class would be a good fit. My son is homeschooled, and the majority of his math at least, is learned through sitting there and teaching himself. I don't think that's what he is looking for in a summer camp setting.

We'll have to look more carefully at other courses. PLease keep the feedback coming!

they are sooo fun. probably one of the options for 7th and 8th graders for over the summer. As a never more this summer, i got somewhat bored but it was still really fun. I recomend it. THe classes also are fairly difficult (mainly the pace and the fact you are not allowed to study out of class).

i've heard that a lot too
i went to lancaster, but i didn't like it as much as saratoga
it's true they have more traditions and everything
but i just felt like i made closer friendships at saratoga and at lancaster i was just kind of friends with everyone
it depends on your preference i guess

My daughter was active in CTY since the summer after 6th grade. She started with a drama course at Chestertown, but then did the science courses- Biology, Genetics, Genomics, Topics in Chemistry - at Lancaster, Carlisle and Baltimore. She is HG and the social aspect was definitely a plus. It was definitely an opportunity for her to explore areas of interest that were not available at her home school or readily available through a college environment. I do not recommend the IPMS; very isolating. Feel free to pm me with any questions.

Don't goto to JHU!!!!!!!!!! Too strict serioulsy. And not as many hot girls
the one in carlisle is the best. The one in la kinda suxs to. I did two years in LA and one in JHU. One in dickinson (my first year) so fun
