We've been living outside the US for 15 years and things have certainly changed since I applied to schools all those years ago. Can someone explain what a "likely letter" is? S is a rising senior in a helmet sport and has already been asked for scores/transcripts from some LACs. Thanks!

A Likely Letter is issued by the admissions office of an Ivy League school to an athlete who has applied that states that after a review of their application, they are “likely to be admitted.”

I gather that some Patriot League schools may also use Likely Letters.

A Likely Letter comes from admissions and is about as solid as it gets before the actual admission letter. Don’t fail anything and don’t get arrested!

above post pretty much says it all. its a 100% admission barring some horrific twist of fate.

The reason the LL exists in the Ivy League is so a D1 recruited athlete can be secure in foregoing a scholarship offer and letting the National Letter of Intent signing date pass without having to wait for the 4/1 official Ivy admissions date.

A Likely Letter is one of the loveliest pieces of mail a high school senior could ever receive :)
