why does EVERYONE put this own their app?

Because they think it looks good. Are you asking what it means, or..?

I wouldn't say everyone. I definitely didn't put it on my app, and I don't recommend doing so unless your other activities are completely nonexistent.

Of course, if you're the President of your school's NHS, or have some other substantial leadership position, you should mention it. But otherwise...

Depends on how admission into NHS is accounted for in your school. For example, at my high school getting into NHS is EXTREMELY tough, you have to fill out a college-like application and write essays, etc etc, and then out of the people that apply some get in. I would definitely mention NHS as an activity if it was something worth putting effort into in which you were commended afterwards.

Everybody and their grandmother has NHS. =)

I got rejected from NHS :'(

The problem, xindianx, is that individual NHS groups rarely have any rigor, and there's not an easy way to tell colleges about why your organization is different. You could, of course, write about it as part of a "resume", but - to be brutally honest - this would probably come across as a desperate attempt at application-padding. If, say, you did hundreds of hours of community service to qualify for NHS, mention those, and don't emphasize the fact that they were to satisfy requirements.
