Exploration Floors & Goddard

I'd like to become a lawyer some day and the descriptions of NYU CORPS and Goddard seem to be pretty fulfilling, especially within the sector of community service that seems vital to developing leadership.

Does anyone have any experience with the exploration floors or Goddard? I'm especially interested in the Power of Politics intellectual stream for Goddard.

I live in Goddard now and am moving to Broome as a continuation of the Residential College. I’m also the VP of the Residential College Board, which helps oversee this program, so I have a lot of experience with it. I also happen to be in the Power of Politics stream!

We do a lot of events, whether it’s going to Intelligence Squared debates in Skirball, touring the Federal Reserve or going to protests/political gatherings. There’s also the opportunity for you to create your own events; for example, I gathered a group of people to go to the College Republican/Democrat debate this spring (I’m a member of the CRs as well), and that was a pretty darn interesting event.

As for community service, there are a TON of opportunities. One of the major events is during spring break, where Goddard students who apply can have the opportunity to go to NOLA (new orleans) for spring break to volunteer there. There is a cost, but we try to alleviate it by fundraising. We also participate heavily in Relay for Life and partner with our upperclassmen counterpart (Broome St.). They at Broome Street also have the Broome Community Group, which you can also be a part of. They have weekly continuous community service events with organizations like Housing Works.

Feel free to ask me any question about the program, the dorm or anything else related to it. I know a little bit about it ;)

Could you give me a general overview of the dorms as compared to the other residential halls? Are the debates well organized and in a certain style like Lincoln-Douglas or more of a brouhaha of opposing political ideologies?

The dorm is very small in the number of people that live here. We have a little over 200 people in the building, compared to 900 in 3N and sizable amounts in other buildings. If you make an effort you’ll get to know everyone in the building. The rooms are a little smaller than average, but my room specifically is pretty damn good.

The debates are organized by a foundation called the Rosenkranz Foundation and they are very organized. They are hosted by John Donvan, a correspondent on ABC News and are on NPR and on Bloomberg Television. Normally there will be an affirmative and opposing side with 3 people on each, with some big names on both sides. Some people that were on the panels included Gov. Gray Davis (CA), Gov. Eliot Spitzer, Fareed Zarkaria, and some other big names.

How can we get out of Explorations if we don’t like it? Is there any consequences?
