Has anyone been to/heard of this program? Know anything about it? Is it a valuable experience or just another money-making program?

My younger brother wants to go this summer and we wanted your advice.

I went two summers ago. I would put it in the money-making category. I had a great time and made many friends, but it is not as intensive or selective as other summer programs, and a lot of kids seemed to be there just because their parents wanted to get rid of them for three weeks and enhance their chances of being accepted to an Ivy at the same time. Plus the amount of rules is a bit ridiculous.

Anyone have any more insight/advice?

Completely agree with elven_hobbit.

Other opinions?

It's kind of a joke...I mean apparently it's very fun, but it's not at all serious or prestigious. It's known as "sexplo" (due to lots of apparent hookups) and generally disliked by Yalies staying on campus over the summer lol. If you're looking for something educational or serious, this is not it. But if you just want fun, then sure.

I am not familiar with Yale's Summer Program for high school students (other than the acting workshop), but I can recommend the summer programs for high school students at Harvard, Stanford & Brown.

Thanks - anyone else?

I had a really good time. It wasn't academic, but I met a lot of interesting people who I still keep in touch with. I would really recommend this program if you are going into 10th or 11th grade, and want a mix between summer camp and a college program such as the ones offered at Standford, Columbia, Cornell, Brown... and so on. Feel free to message me for more details!

You know, on one hand it isn't academic. On the other hand, the director has been to basically every top college ever. I plan on getting a rec from him. And it is a TOTAL blast, although SP isnt as fun as IP at Wellesley.

I haven't actually attended myself, but I have 2 friends who have been going for about 3 years. They love it. Like collegecrazy said, it's a mix of education and summer camp. You obviously don't get college credits and don't learn as much as you would at per se Summer@Brown or Harvard SSP, but it's a fun experience and I'd highly suggest it. It is however pretty expensive.

I went to Explo at Yale last summer, and it was awesome. I wouldn’t put it on a college application, but if you’re looking to learn something new and have a good time doing it, Explo is definitely the way to go. And by the way, I didn’t think the rules were ridiculous. Yes, they have four check ins per day, and yes, they have boundaries in town and you have to be back on campus by 7:30, but you can stay outside of your dorm until eleven, and frankly, in a town like New Haven, those precautions really aren’t unreasonable.

REALLY REALLY depends on what you want.

not to be offensive for any past participant. But last summer, EXPLO program and my program(ivy scholar) happened to be on the same time. All we know about “those kids” is that they take two classes per day (vs. our 9a.m. -11 p.m. schedule not even counting hw), party all night…
We pretty much used them as inside jokes.we look at their name tags(cuz they were different from our name badges…) and we make faces with each other…

but on the other hand if you are just looking for an “explo” program, as opposed to an academic enrichment, I guess you should go for it. It’s probably gonna to be a real blast.
