Explorations?

I am considering EXPLORATIONS, especially "Big Apple, Big Screen," "Bohemians and Rebels," and "All the World's a Stage." I was originally planning to dorm in Rubin, but Rubin doesn't have the Explorations I'm interested in. Third North, Goddard, and Hayden are more expensive halls; I'm wondering if the extra cost will be worth it provided that I get into Explorations.

My questions are: How intensive are these programs? For those of you already involved, what do you do and do you think the cost is worth it? How much participation is required? Is it a good opportunity to explore future career interests (i.e. film and theatre) and take advantage of NYC's offerings? (Especially when one is really unsure as to a future career path, and also is not an actor/actress but would rather work behind-the-scenes on productions.)

Thanks in advance.

hm....I'm considering the French exploration in Hayden.....anyone else interested? I wonder.

this is all ive heard -

*bohemians and rebels - dont do much, floor always smells of pot
*big apple, big screen - do cool things, but share a suite with about 13 other people
*all the world's a stage - get to go to broadway and off-broadways shows for free sometimes, and went to an snl taping last year (im looking at this one, too)

I'm looking @ all the world's a stage, too...

is anyone thinking of the gotham one. it sounds kinda cool, and exploring nyc seems like a lot of fun

Does anyone know anything about Visionaries or the NYU Show?

im really considering doing explorations so i can get into the dorm i want

hi...i got into gallatin and was interested in the french exploration too, but i was wondering what the social life was like in these...i was also thinking about the boheimians and rebels exploration or the through the lens was because of my interest in photo

ocean blue--from what I've found out, the French Exploration is new....so we'll set the precedent. And I know that if IIIII'm in it, we'll MAKE it fun and interesting and everyhting :) :)

haha ya! you sound nice- what school are you in?
i hope i can go to nyu... i have to work out the $ situation...they are only giving 1/2 the fin aid other schools are

Hey prospective NYUers!
I'm a current freshman in Stern, and I am in the All the World's a Stage Explorations program.
I see that several of you are interested in Explorations, and I encourage it for everyone.
First of all, NYU doesn't have a campus, so you have to find a separate community, and Explorations does that.
My RA's terrific, and she was in Explorations too.
You basically have a 40-person family in the form of your floor.
Plus, Goddard is the BEST dorm because of its location.
And every other floor is Explorations, so you get to know everyone.

If anyone has any questions about this Explorations or any others (in Goddard), feel free to post, or email me.

I must warn you though, this year, the shows we went to were really...avant garde. That means weird. No Broadway shows, and no SNL tapings however. But interesting. Oh and you also have to take Writing the Essay in junction with this Explorations. It's a pain, but it also bonds the floor so much. :)

hi!thanks for your post- do you know anything about the photo one in hayden or the visionaries one or the arts ones?

KYang, I was wondering if you could tell me some of the events you went to and who picks the events? Also how regualarly do they occur? thanks

oceanblue22: Sorry, but I don't know anything about photo, because it's in Hayden. However, I can tell you a lot about Visionaries because I live right under them. It's pretty vague, so it's really up to your RA and faculty advisor, but they basically teach about leadership through community service and lectures and stuff. I know they also went to the UN this year, which was pretty cool. They also hosted a discussion panel for all of Goddard. This year, the RA is pretty strict, but they're still rowdy, so that didn't deter them from partying...but RAs range from year to year, but it's a good start for anyone in Stern.

jbursty10: For All the World's a Stage, I think we got duped, because the description definitely said Broadway shows and SNL tapings, but our year didn't get any of that stuff. I should clarify about Writing the Essay class: it is only for Writing New York and All the World's a Stage (out of Goddard...I'm not sure for other ones). But because we had that, our professor chose a lot of the events, and then we had to write about them. We went to the Winter Garden at Ground Zero, this weird thing called Red Beads (avant garde puppet stilt things), and some other stuff. But besides the events necessary for WTE, we went to some pretty cool, off-off-off Broadway things. We went to The Seven, which is a hip-hop adaptation of Aeschylus's Seven Against Thebes, greek tragedy. We also went to the Met Opera. Fun stuff. Our faculty advisor and RA and professor work together to plan events, around once a month, but they value all the students' input.

I hope this was helpful, let me know if you have any other questions.

i live on an explorations floor, but not one mentioned in this thread. i love it, because you've got a large group of friendly people to hang out with right away, so it's not quite as awkward to introduce yourself to people. the requirements for my floor are not difficult or time consuming at all.

KYANG! I'm so glad you posted on this thread!! It's brill to hear from someone actually in All The World's A Stage. Okay get ready for the onslaught of questions...

Are there lots of Tisch/actors in it?

Do you feel you missed out by not mingling with a mix of people?

What's Goddard like - room size/quality/etc? Do you like living there? I've looked on the NYU housing site but it doesn't give that much info. Basically I'm trying to decide between Uhall, because the new rooms look really nice and having a kitchen/living area would be cool, and Goddard becuase I love theatre/film and it would be cool to be surrounded with people who think likewise :) Do you think it's worth the sacrifice?

Do you get on well/mix with the other exploration programs in Goddard?

Do you get any say in the choosing/planning of the events? Can you suggest things? If not, who does?

How often and how time consuming are they? Ar eyou obliged to go to every single one?

What type of work do you do for them? Is it a lot? Does it count towards anything? Is it enjoyable? And what's this Curriculum connected business?

When I read the description of the exploration, it talked mainly about how we act in our everyday lives and reconstruct ourselves and stuff, is that what you look at rather than discussing performances and theatre and stuff? Because it sounded a bit like psycology or something to me.

Anything negative I should know about it?

If I'm in Tisch will I not take the essay class with the rest of my group? (apparently we do a different one, about art?)

What happens after Freshman year, do you continue with the exploration?

You'll be pleased to know I've run out of questions :P I'm sure I broke the record for most questions in a single post! Thank you so much if you can take the time to answer them!! I'm rubbish at making decisions, and this is quite an important one so I'd like to be fully informed! Your help is VERY much appreciated :) :)

Always glad to help!
I'm really happy to see that so many people are interested in Explorations, because it really is a terrific experience.

1) We don't have a lot of Tisch people (I believe this year, we only had one--and he was film). We do however, have an abundance of performers, mostly in Steinhart (lots of musical theater/vocal performance/music ed). So there's lots of singing going on :). I can't say that for every group, but to give some reference, my RA was on the floor 2 years ago and she is a vocal perf. in Steinhart.

2) I don't feel left out at all because you form such a close bond with these people. Of course, you're not best friends with everyone, but you know everyone's names. I know one of my friends in Rubin doesn't know everyone on his floor, and I was flabbergasted. I can't imagine that situation in any Exploration floor. Plus, it is a mix, because there are people from every school (minus social work...I haven't met anyone in that though...).

3) I'm really glad you asked this question. I LOVE GODDARD. I think overall, it's the best dorm, simply for its location. I literally roll out of bed 5 min before class starts, and I still make it. It's amazing. Plus you live on top of Starbucks, which is totally sweet. The rooms are nice (a bit on the small side, but it's really not that big of a deal and there are some pretty big rooms in Goddard). There's A/C, great view if you get an outside window. Overall, fantastic, especially if you're someone who can't wake up early.

4) I must say that we had a bit of a scuffle with the 7th floor Visionaries (we're on the 6th) because they're really loud. We retaliated by leaving a giant cardboard man in their hallway. I know, not much, but it was really fun doing it. Other than that, we get along with the other floors pretty well, especially the music floor, just because theater and music go together. I have really good friends on the Gotham floor too. But sometimes, a little floor rivalry can be fun :).

5) The events are planned by your faculty affiliate and RA and, in our case, our WTE professor too. They definitely listen to suggestions. For example, we thought most of the stuff we went to first semester was too avant-garde, and so they changed pace and took us to see opera and some hip-hop. Pretty sweet.

6) The events happen about once a month, and it's just a show, so a few hours. You are not obligated to go to every single one, but they do strongly encourage that you go to the ones you can. They understand that people have other commitments, but this is also a commitment. Plus, the shows are free (otherwise heavily subsidized), so there's no reason not to go!

7) You don't have to do anything for the Exploration floor itself. However, there is a linked Writing the Essay for the floor to take. They strongly recommend you to take it, but since you're in Tisch, you'll be taking the Tisch one, so you won't have to worry about it.

8) Hmmm...well we definitely discuss the performances during class extensively. I suppose how we act in everyday life is a sort of performance, and we touch on that during the class. But since you're not taking it, we do have a few floor dinners during which we discuss how we're doing so far and blah. I mean, the focus is on the performances, and what it means to you.

9) This is a thinker...the only thing I was a little miffed about was the fact that they didn't take us to Broadway shows or SNL tapings. I know they advertised that, but it definitely didn't happen for us. However, I do find it really cool that they take us to sorta underground stuff. It's the kind of shows that needs an introduction, and this offers it.

10) answered already

11) You can choose another upperclassmen Exploration, or you can make your own.

I hope this helps, and keep the questions coming if you've got more!

Hey all,

I'm a current NYU senior, and I actually work in the Department of Residential Education at NYU (which is the office that designed/runs the Explorations program).

I would echo all of Kyang's responses above, and I just wanted to say if you've got any more questions about Explorations, I'd be more than happy to put in my two cents!

Is it possible to reside in one of the low cost housing rooms and still join an explorations program?

How does the explorations application "work?" I mean, how do they decide who gets to be in the programs? I really like the "Big Apple, Big Screen," but is it unlikely that I get to be a part of it?
