Has anyone heard back about the November fly in? We’re supposed to have been contacted by the 9th, which I took to mean before the 9th. I had an issue with the Middlebury fly in where I contacted them last week regarding hearing the decision, only to learn that they had never even received my application! It must have been a technology malfunction, but now I’m super nervous that the same thing happened with Bowdoin.

FYI, I’ve applied to 6 or 7 fly in’s (some of which are overlapping, so of course I wouldn’t be able to attend them all, even on the miracle I won them all). I’ve only been accepted by the Tufts fly in so far (barely a week after I applied too! I was super flattered, and it definitely made them rise a few rankings on my college list.) However, I’ve been rejected by Carleton, Colby, and by default, Middlebury. It’s really hard to overcome disappointment. Carleton had been one of my top picks and now that I couldn’t even score the fly in, I’m wondering if it’s worth it to bother applying. (I’m a QuestBridge applicant, by the way; I need to submit my rankings very soon, so I definitely need to figure out my feelings on Carleton!)

Saw your post on another thread also. Oberlin is still accepting Fly In apps…FYI. As for rejections, don’t take it too hard. It happens to all.
Hopefully Bowdoin will come soon. You can always email the woman in charge and just double check that all is in order.
Good Luck!

Rayne, Bowdoin was late notifying for the Sept Explore Bowdoin program too so don’t fret. They said by Sept 7 and we heard late on the 8th so you will hear by the end of the week, I’m sure. In fact the kids were so anxious when notifications were more than a day late that I had an email all ready to go to Claudia Marroquin…and then the decisions came out!

Absolutely everybody is accepted to some fly-ins and rejected from others. And if you ask last years QB kids, many of them are attending colleges where they didn’t get into the fly-in and were wait-listed at schools where they attended the fly-in. Someone said this: If you don’t get in it means nothing, and if you do get in, it’s a leg up but not a sure thing.

My D is doing the Carleton fly-in at the end of this month and I’ll have her post her experiences on the Carleton forum so you can check out some impressions ‘from the ground’. HSG ^^^ (and others) is attending different college fly-ins, (Scripps etc) so try to ask around about schools you’re interested in here and on the QB FB page. I know it’s disappointing not to be able to visit but there are current questies from every LAC available to answer Q’s - if you haven’t joined the FB group, do that! And don’t give up on a school you love – because you could be flying there next year as a student :)!!! All I know about Carleton is 1) frisbee 2) cold 3) frisbee 4) cold…lol. No, seriously my D loves it too.

That Diversity fly-In program list has all the one’s I applied to on it already; sorry, nothing new to add. :(

Actually, regarding the Carleton fly in, I’m in a college admissions program and the woman in charge has connections with the representative in our area. A family friend of mine was disappointed that I didn’t get the fly in (because she knows how starry-eyed I was about it), and offered to book me a ticket with her frequent flyer miles. So now I’m trying to get all these things to align and somehow make it there for the Carleton program. So hopefully (fingers crossed!) I’ll be seeing your daughter there at the end of October. I should know this week whether or not Carleton can make a spot for me.

Thanks for your guy’s help! I’ll post on these forums how the program fly-in’s go. :)

Hey you know Carleton pays $250 of your ticket for any Questbridge applicant visiting campus. We got an actual coupon in the mail and then another email about it. Make sure you take advantage of that offer when booking your flight!!!

Honeybee63, Yes, I recieved a coupon with my rejection letter. At the time, it sort of felt like they were adding insult to injury, but now I realize it was just an opportunity that could help others. The family friend booking my ticket is using frequent flyer miles, so I don’t think the coupon applies, but I’m still going to try! Thank you for letting me know. :)

By the way, I got the confirmation today: I’ll be going to the Carleton fly in after all! Do you know what your daughter’s packing? I’m from Florida, so I’m not really sure what to expect/bring…

Nvonwilcz, I haven’t heard anything. To be honest, I’m sort of fulling expecting rejection, due to snippets I heard about the applicants for the September fly in. I’m trying to prepare myself for the disappointment. ‘It’s nothing personal, it’s nothing personal…’ is the mantra running in my head. Good luck to you!!

Rayne, I’m so happy for you!!! That is such great news
I started a thread on the Carleton forum asking about the fly-in so go check it out. Someone did post something about the weather and it guess it could be cold. We’ll know more closer to the time. I think my D has a CC account but she doesn’t really use it bc she says reading what the kids post on CC makes her suicidal lol. I think she means those ‘terrible’ 2350 SAT scores and ‘chance me’ threads etc. I’m sure you know what she means But I’ll tell her about you and you guys can PM and figure out how to get in touch when you’re there Again, congrats for the opportunity to attend Taste of Carleton!

torquado, congrats, you will love it! It’s an amazing time. I posted my D’s experience at the September fly-in in this forum if you are curious. Have a great time!!!

Rejected. It’s really frustrating because I don’t know if I’m getting rejected because of a bad essay or because they don’t need more Asian-Caucasian mixes or if they don’t want to spend $900 on plane tickets for me (only Williams gave me a reason for my rejection). Agh, at least there’s an application fee waiver.

nhdmaniac, have you gone through your apps and looked at your essays for the fly-ins where you were admitted vs rejected? My D did this and was able to shape her essays and apps accordingly. After that no more rejections. Even if it’s too late for fly-ins it will help for CA and supplements. If your stats are good, consider your LOR and essays, these are what you still have control over. But also remember that fly-in decisions are not necessarily predictive. Colleges try to give the chance to students who are far away and who might not be able to get there otherwise…

I got in. But, nhdmania…I got rejected at Amherst, Middlebury and others. But in here, Colby and others. It is really hard to figure out reasoning…but college admissions can be just as random. Use the fee waiver and apply. Why not? Rejection from a Fly in DOES NOT mean you will be rejected during admissions. I keep seeing that on this board and hearing it from school!
HSG

Nhdmanic, I was rejected as well. I’m calling after school to hear if they can directly give me some reasons that I wasn’t what they were looking for. I’m considering calling Colby as well, because I got a very blunt rejection via email from them. It’s definitely a hit to the ego, but I guess I can make this a learning experience. :P

honeybee63, I know exactly what your daughter is talking about! Looking at other kids talking about this who are serious (which isn’t very common at my school) definitely gives me a reality check. Getting in isn’t a breeze, and I definitely need to lower my confidence a little bit (which all these fly-in rejections are helping with! LOL). :)

By the way, for those who were rejected from Bowdoin, the Kalamazoo and Wesleyan fly in’s are on the same dates of Bowdoin, so think of this as an opportunity to see more schools!

Bowdoin wants an answer from those accepted ASAP. Hopefully those accepted will see the email and respond. Several overlap with Bowdoin including Smith, Wesleyan, Pomona and a few others. I imagine there will be some who will try and get to two back to back (We’d like our child to, but her preference is to not do so), but others will have to decline.
Smith has released decisions, Wesleyan is starting too and Pomona has not (that we know of). Because Bowdoin was considered a long shot, we heard that MANY who applied to Bowdoin and at least 2 others the same weekend, hoping to get at least one.
The ‘grapevine’ says that just as with admissions, the fly-ins accept more kids than they can take knowing that some will decline.
Yes, it is all a reality check regarding the caliber and determination of kids out there.

Tho’ a first year at Bowdoin, my son didn’t apply to the fly-in. I can’t remember if they requested any financial info on the application? I know the school is really striving to diversify it’s student profile, not only racially, but socioeconomically and with assertive outreach outside the Mass, ME, general New England area.

Received word about Bowdoin on the 9th and to my surprise I was accepted…I am from South Texas and live in a border city. I’m so excited to get to travel across the US to visit a top LAC such as Bowdoin. One question, how’s the weather up there around this time? (South Texas is always hot so my wardrobe pretty much consists of minimal clothing haha)

P.S. I am a Mexican-American who came to the US when I was around 7. Hopefully I get to meet other Spanish speakers at this program.

Jorgom, you definitely will! In September there were Spanish speaking kids from TX, NY and CA there, plus the groups on campus. Also I believe that Claudia Marroquin who runs Explore Bowdoin speaks Spanish. They will send you a packing list and lots of info about the weather plus updates when you are packing. Don’t worry it is very well organized.

The other thing to be prepared for is a long flight with a pretty late arrival the first night - maybe close to midnight, and then on Sunday you will probably leave campus to get to the airport at 3-4 AM. Just a head up although there’s nothing you can do about it but make sure you have a pillow and comfortable travel clothes so you can sleep on the plane - or anywhere!

Congratulations and enjoy your wonderful opportunity.
