Hi anyone who is going to be a freshman Aug 2014 going to explore NOLA the week before move in? Is it worthwhile? Is it expensive?

My son is going to apply, and it’s first come, first served registration opens on May 25th.
The cost is $525 It looks like they changed the program this year and there are several different programs actually. There are 8 different tracks for The NOLA Experience, Greenie Camp, IGNITE, Hillel and a Summer Journalism Experience.

It is very popular and they keep expanding it. That is good that they took some programs that already existed but weren’t classified as part of the NOLA Experience (Summer Journalism, for example. I was able to put a student onto that last year and they loved it) and got them under one umbrella. Makes things much more organized. But the reviews for NOLA Experience in general have been quite favorable.

My S1 graduated Tulane in 2011 (this May from Tulane Law) and said in hindsight, he wished he had done it. He said that he was a bit envious of the kids who had, since they all had already made good friends and seemed so much more relaxed at the start of school than those who hadnt. S2 is going to Tulane this fall, and I think we will find the money for him to go - it seems very worthwhile.

Does anyone know if there is an application process for Explore (fka NOLA Experience) or just pay $ on May 25 and you are in?

In the past there has been an application process. Not sure about the dates.

It says first come first served. You just register and the fee is added to your accounts receivable.

They changed the registration date to Wednesday at 3:00 CST. Bad timing for us, we will be at sons graduation!

Thanks for the heads up! We will be on a plane headed to NOLA for orientation!

I’d register for the Screen, Stage and Screen just to hang out with Andrew for the week, lol! He’s so great! He is the leader for that group.

@debmomNY did your daughter get to register for Explore NOLA? Anyone else have a son or daughter that is attending? My son registered for the 21st Century Citizenship one.

Let us know how Orientation goes!

Most all Explore NOLA groups are already full.

The programs have become enormously popular. They keep expanding the number of slots and they keep filling up fast.

The food one, the Stage and Screen and the sports one filled up within minutes.

I know it is a long way from being to the point of all incoming freshmen being able to have an opportunity to attend, but hopefully it will keep expanding as they create more programs and find enough leaders to be able to have multiple sections of the ones where that is possible. If that were to happen, at some “tipping point” it would change when move-in day really occurs. Of course, there are many schools out there that do their orientation a few days to a week ahead of when classes start. I don’t think this will ever take the place of orientation in June. But I could see where they would do move-in the weekend before NOLA starts, including some of the same seminars etc. they have now, and then the parents leave and the students do their NOLA thing the Tuesday-Friday before classes start. Just thinking out loud.

yes, dolphn, my D is signed up for “greenie”! We were on the runway, flying to NOLA and our flight was delayed. It turned out to be a good thing as she was able to sign up before we took off!

That’s great, one time to be glad for a delay!

do they stay in the room that will be their permanent dorm for explore NOLA?

Yes they do!

Just dropped the boy’s boxes off at Fed Ex! 10 more days until we leave to hit the road for NOLA!
