Expressing Interest Via Talking to the WWS Department Head

I know that I want to major in international relations, and I think it would be cool to fulfill this intent at Princeton.

Should I contact the department head of WWS and express interest? I know you don't enter the program right away, but I am still very interested in the program and attending Princeton.

What should I do?

The dean of the Woodrow Wilson School is Anne-Marie Slaughter (slaughtr@princeton.edu). I bet she'll be reasonably responsive if you email her, but don't bother if you're just trying to win points with Admissions. Princeton doesn't care about demonstrated interest.

Thanks Weasel...you have to be one of the most helpful people on CC!! (I'm being serious)!

How would you frame the email to avoid the "demonstrated interest" spiel? Thanks so much...

I don't think you have to worry about avoiding anything. Professor Slaughter isn't going to send a report to the Admissions Office saying "Don't admit this kid. He's a suckup." ;) Just be polite and ask specific questions.

Yeah, Dean Slaughter is super nice and helpful. She might still be in China though, so it might take her a while to get back to you. I can't remember when she said she'd be back. Weasel might know...

You might want to ask her about the new "Scholars in the Nations Service" program. WWS is really excited about that.

^Cool thanks for all your help.

I thought Princeton didn't care about who visited but did keep a record of emails?

I seem to recall reading a newspaper article (Washington Post, perhaps?) about thank you notes, and how Harvard does not save any thank you notes you write (to your tour guide, overnight host, etc) but Princeton does put them in your file. It might be the same with emails, but I don't really know.
