I just got an email asking me to decide whether or not I would like to stay on the waitlist for the Fall of 2018. The new deadline I got quoted was June 15th. Has anyone else gotten this email? I applied for the early application deadline on November 1st to CLA as my first choice and CEHD as my second choice college(I am intending to major in Psychology).
Does anyone know or have an idea of the likelihood that I would offered a spot? The University of Minnesota is my first choice, so I opted to remain on the waitlist, though my parents are now starting to push me to decide on one of my other schools for the Fall of 2018.
d got the same email. She fortunately had a great visit to her second choice last weekend and is pretty sure she will go there regardless. Still sort of baffled by this whole experience…
I also got that email. Applied to CEHD for Kinesiology and CLA. 28 ACT and 3.4 GPA. Pretty much giving up hope at this point but if they offer me a spot in the coming months I may take it. This whole process has made me a bit sour towards UMN
Same for me as well. I chose to stay on the waitlist. Applied to CSE for computer science with a 2.8 GPA and 33 ACT. Can I be admitted to CLA without being admitted to CSE? My second choice major was Computer Science B.A. in CLA. I am very hopeful but not optimistic, and am making plans for my safety.
Same for my S. Applied in September with lots of enthusiasm toward UMN. Had high hopes due to “rolling admissions” and checked the tracker daily. Deferred and now waitlisted 7 months after applying. The process was rough and I think they definitely need to examine this year’s results carefully to try to do better for next year’s applicants. My S is excited to go to his second choice.
Formal rejection would seem unlikely at this point given that everyone on the WL was already rejected, more or less. Unless your number is called I doubt you would hear from UM again.
They create this mess by failing to index their applicants with an objective formula, leaving it up to three person committees to “holistically” review the applications. Having served on these I can assure you that two different committees can yield two completely different review outcomes for the same application. Yuck.
That said, good luck to all of you who have waited SO long. I hope you get the outcome you are looking for.
My son put $$$ down at a different school but decided to remain on the WL. Looking back at old threads its hard to gauge how many student ultimately get off the WL, but its seems quite low.
From forcing use of the Common App (when its own did not work), to not honoring their “rolling review” process, to redundant and unhelpful, as well as infrequent, messaging on the application tracker/My MN, to the extended wait-list delays, the University has telegraphed its desire to raise its stature along with its inability to do so. It can’t offer this experience to prospective students next year, AND it needs to be transparent about its bungled admissions this year.

but I didn’t get an email! and my email above is correct lmao
@UWDaughters. Agreed about their flawed process and bugged-out application tracker. The worst we have encountered out of 15 applications. I also hate the lack of transparency in the admissions process. My son applied to CBS, but apparently had CLA listed as a secondary. He was deferred then waitlisted. Deferred from CBS? CBS and CLA? Would he have been accepted had he applied to CLA as a primary? I guess we will never know.
I like the RAI metric at the Iowa schools and wish other public flagships would be as transparent.
Our son has had the same frustrations as many above, including last week’s App Tracker status change saying e-mail was sent, when it wasn’t. We finally called today and they confirmed he is on extended WL. After being placed on the 4/15 WL he changed his college priority to CLA first, then CSE (it was originally reversed). Admissions counselor said having CLA as first choice originally would have made no difference. He’s 29 ACT/3.95 GPA steering toward Chemical Engineering/Chemistry major and Music minor. Here’s the kicker - he made it through the audition process with a vocal performance video audition, then was invited to audition in-person - and was accepted as a Music minor. This had no bearing on his general application. He’ll stay on the extended WL just in case, but we’re on to other options now.
