Extent of Legacy?

At Stanford, is legacy considered if your grandparent or uncles attended/donated heavily, or does it only apply to parents?

I’d say it’s only based on if your parents who got in. I had a friend last year who tried to get into Stanford, UCSD, and UCSB. His grandparents both attended Stanford and he wasn’t accepted, his dad went to UCSB and he was accepted. Mom went to to UCSD, and he was also accepted. Not saying it isn’t possible, but admission officers may only want DIRECT blood from mother/father. Quite possible my friend didn’t have the grades either, lol.

Well, it should be noted that it’s easier to get into UCSD and UCSB than Stanford, legacy or no legacy. If a student applies to Temple (parental legacy) and Harvard (grandparent legacy), and is accepted by Temple but not by Harvard, that could mean parental legacy is all that matters. It could also mean a student who’s good enough for Temple isn’t necessarily Harvard material.

I’m sure they would take both grandparents and uncle into account. If your uncle is a big donor then he should have a direct contact in development. The Stanford development person should be able to tell you for sure how much weight it carries.
