There arent many clubs which appeal to me at my school. The only clubs I'm in right now is NJHS and Foreign Lan. Club. I tried out A/V club but it only comprised of taking videos of school functions. Now I'm pretty worried about what I'll have on my college apps. I'm still a sophomore so I have time.

I was thinking about doing the following:

-Take photography course online (betterphoto.com) and build a portfolio because I'd love to go deeper with photography.

-Start a web design portfolio. I'm in love with computers and designing websites. Right now, I'm no where close to programming a decent website but I'm really good at designing the website. I'm able to learn all the programming stuff and launch a portfolio site.

-Become certified in various computer areas. Again, I've wanted to do this for a while. I'd look into Apple's certifications (ACTC, ACSA) and some of Microsoft's certifications. Also, I'm looking into taking the CompTIA exams.

-Service at the local hospital and/or library. I could churn out around 350 hours by the end of senior year.

-Starting a tech site/blog.

-I also wanted to write some articles for magazines but I don't know where to start. I have a great deal of knowledge regarding tech.

--

Will I be able to add that stuff to my college app (I know I can add the service hrs.)? Will it help at all? Also, if you guys have any ideas for me, please tell me. It'd be awesome if they were computer related. Last but not least, I'll surely be trying out in various competitions (math, science, etc).

Oh yea, thanks for reminding me, I forgot to mention that. A friend and I have sent in a proposal for a computer club. Our advisor said we'd be able to get it up and running next year.

do NOT NOT NOT do library volunteering unless you want to be librarian
[/quote]

Why not? I understand it sucks if you're a normal library volunteer (putting away books) but I volunteer at the library and LOVE it. I work for the young adult librarian at my local library and I run events and help make presentations and displays.

Um...yeah i would suggest getting involved with things outside of school. I'm involved in a lot within school but I also do that volunteering, astronomy club, model rocketry, and this Russian thing. None of those are within my school and some (like the rocketry) I have to travel more than an hour to get to. (Damn NJ. What's wrong with shooting off something that looks like missle right into a shopping center? Or better yet...why do we have so many malls/homes that there aren't any wide open fields?)

Unless you actually make a decent amount of money off freelancing web design, I would recommend you stay away from it. I'm a year older than you and I have five years of experience with Photoshop, HTML, and CSS, but it's hard to make it in today's web design world without mastery of PHP or Flash. Not to mention nobody wants to hire a teenager when they can get a professional.

I'd recommend volunteering. I've been a volunteer at my local university hospital since freshman year and although many times the work is tedious, it's worth it in the end.
