will it greatly hurt my chances of getting into a uc if i havent been participating in any extra cir.? pretty much all i have done is be a teacher's assistant in bio.

i am...-bio major planning to transfer to uc berkeley
- 3.7 gpa
- taking about 15 units/semester
-a california community college student.........what are my chances?

I know someone with about the same GPA that tried to transfer to biology and she was Vice President of the student government and President of Alpha Gamma Sigma (Honor Society), Scholarship winner. Also, she volunteered at the ER at a look hospital, taught dance classes and worked at Old Navy. She didn't get in.

well...i am a scholarship winner, i had a job and will get another, but thats nothing. i guess sometimes its the luck of the draw too. do you know if personal statements matter all that much for UC's? my counselor pretty much told me that UCs dont care about much besides you gpa when ure a cc student b/c they realize that you have other stuff going on outside of school so they don't expect you to have too many EC's. but then again, if ure friend didn't get in my chances are way lowered.

I believe your personal statement matters very much. Describe your circumstances/background such as work and going to school, economic hardship, etc...

Are you an underrepresented minority?

What was the scholarship you won and how did you win it?

Unless you already submitted your application, it is not to late to get some ECs. Go join a club or two, volunteer in the community, etc...

I think berkeley looks for a diverse applicant that will add something to the student population. If you can demonstrate something that makes you a unique applicant, then your chances are decent for acceptance in Cal.

In the end, it is the comprehensive package that matters. No one criteria will get you accepted or denied.

I would also check with the school you are applying to to see if they will accept additional documents. I am applying to grad school and most admission advisors I have spoken to reccomends sending in a resume even though the application does not ask for one. I submitted a resume for undergrad because it was required.

I would apply to Berkeley and UCLA and a few safety schools. Good luck!

yes...college is very random so i'm not giving up yet. MOWIE: i got the V.P. and dean's scholarship based on academic achievent from my cc ( i had to write an essay, etc), i am vietnamese, but i dunno if being asian hurts my chances or doesn't matter at all, i was actually born in vietnam and my family is not very well off and i do have some hardships that i can write about. i am trying to get in some last ditch effort ec's, but does anyone know if i need to fill out some papers at the school first to get credit for the volunteering that i do? ( youc an tell i volunteer alot!)

p.s. i'm also a cali resident, so cc student, i dunno if ure friend was, but it increases your chance of getting in by A LOT.

dont' worry about ECs I am going for engineering in UCI and I have NONE so far well except a weekly volunteer work, dunno if that counts. I am not in any club. Ok I would love to be in some but the fact is I DON'T HAVE ANY TIME. I am taking 18 units and have 8 hours of classes each in four days. I am taking Calculus III, Chem etc. its hard and I don't have time. I think colleges understand that, now if you were taking like 8 units and didn't have any I think that would raise an eyebrow.

I am taking 25 units, and I am Communication Director in the ASCC, and a member of Alpha Gamma Sigma (and other unimportant clubs). I do plenty of volunteer work, and TA for economics.

But the bad part is I still won't be accepted at UCB or UCLA :(

wow, how do you find the time to do all that? anyways, i'm only taking about 15 units per semester. i dunno how true this is, but one of my counselors told me that colleges think that bio majors are usually not very well rounded people, so aside from school school school try to show them that you get out once in a while, hopefully that will work to my advantage. CC student, 25 units?? whats ure major??...if ure gpa is high and ure taking 25 units with plenty of math and sciences you should get into berkeley or at least ucla. my friend got into ucla from highschool and her stats were nothin great, pretty much like mine, a bit more ec's, but i really do think your personal life history matters alot.

My GPA is 3.73. I am a business major, so the competetion is fierce. I am taking easy classes this semester, ie health, some BS intro to computers class, business law, accounting, history, accounting software. I might (if I am lucky) be able to pad it with BS work experience classes for student government work, but I don't think my counselor will sign off on 31 units. Because I am taking all easy classes, I am likely to receive a 4.0 this semester. My weak point is math. I received a C in my Calculus II class, which brought me down from a 3.80.

yeah, i think chem 180 killed me and i'm gonna have to take calc II at one point too. hopefully i'll gte off with a B. at the school i'm going to, chem is even harder than most UC's, but i need to get all my chem in so i can finish assist along with igetc. my couselor also told me that joining the honors program will help you a lot. something like 30% of bio majors who apply get into berkeley at my school and 80% who apply and are in the honors program get in.
