Extra Classes @ College

So at my college the standard # of classes per semester taken is 4. If you take more than the normal 4 classes, would it factor into your GPA? As in if you take more classes, you can raise your GPA higher? How does that work?

Of course it would factor in your GPA.

Example:
Assume the following first semester grades
Chem I: C+ (2.3), 4 credits
Calc I: A- (3.7), 4 credits
English 101: A (4.0), 3 credits
Colonial US History: B (3.0), 3 credits
Semester GPA: [(2.3x4) + (3.7x4) + (4x3) + (3x3)]/14 = 3.21

If he had taken one more class, say, Spanish I (4 credits), and gotten an ‘A’ (4.0), in it, the GPA would be instead:
[(2.3x4) + (3.7x4) + (4x3) + (3x3) + (4x4)]/18 = 3.39

So if you take an extra class and do good in it, you can raise your GPA ;)

Yes, it is very possible to take more classes, but schools usually set a limit on the # of credits you can take in a semester. Anything after that you have to get permission to go course overload and pay extra tuition for the credits that go over that limit. The extra classes count like any other class.

Depending on how hard the extra class is, you may need to ask for permission. If you do well in these classes your GPA will rise and you may also be able to graduate early. If you don’t do well, you will have may have problems.
