Extra-curricular ideas for small-town student

I live in the middle of nowhere. Hic-town, USA. Blink-and-you'll miss it. With almost a complete and utter lack of academic opportunities. My small 250-student high school is nearly completely sports oriented, yet I still want a very appealing extra-curricular and honors section of my college ap. any help would be highly appreciated

Thankx y'all (:))

You could always try to find national competitions in things you're interested in. This is easiest for writers and artists, but I'm sure there are other things.

Can you tell us what kinds of things you're interested in?

I'm sure there's a play or musical at least every other year. Get involved with that. You can also join your school's academic quiz or mock trial teams, since even the smallest schools have at least one of those. If you're into music, start up a school-sponsored group or something.

My high school has only 180 students, and it has a quiz team, a mock trial team, several music groups, a good NHS chapter, and alternating plays and musicals every other year. I'm sure your high school offers at least some of the same things.

Ooo for the record, my school has neither a quiz team or a mock trial team. We don't have any High School (or local/regional) academic teams at all. We Have NHS but it really doesn't do anything... We have Theatre, FFA/SOILS/FCA, Sports, and Student Govt (popularity contest)

Oh well!

Well, we have what's a called a Knowledge Bowl Team, which is like a quiz team, and I'm captain of that, and FCCLA, which has a parliamentary team, which is kinda like a mock trial team. We too, have honor society. I'm also on student govt. That's about all we have (i never found anything to do on FFA).

I'm no J.R. Tolken, but a pretty good writer. I used be able to draw pretty well, but haven't been able to find time to in months. Oh, and I'm decent at math. Any suggestions on contests?

D-Yu, I don't know about math contests...search on Google. But Student Government, NHS, knowledge bowl, theatre etc would all look good. Also get involved in Volunteering.

(And don't complain too much about living in a small town, I drove past a town, taking the supposedly scenic route, and there were 2 homes and one trailer home, and the sign said "welcome to ______" and under that "population 7" (I don't remember the town name)

interesting ... maybe the school was in a cave ... :)

or start something like a coat drive, hat drive, canned food drive, etc. Colleges love taking initiative and starting things on your own.

Do community service and see if a school near you offers any mathematics contests.
