Extra Curriculars for Getting into Competitive Pre-Med Programs

Hey guys!

So I am a rising junior in high school and I am aiming to get into a competitive 7-8 year pre-med program such as that of Johns Hopkins. My school doesnt give a gpa on a 4.0 scale but I have a weighted gpa thus far thats close to 103 and unweighted gpa thus far thats about 99. I have taken Honors Chem, Honors Physics, AP Physics 1, and I will be taking Honors Biology, AP Chem and AP Enviro Science Junior Year and then AP Biology senior year (yeah ik my school offers honors biology junior year instead of freshman year lol). In terms of standardized tests other than the SAT, I will be taking the AP exams for Bio, Enviro and Chem ofc, SAT Biology Molecular, SAT Math Level 2, and SAT Chemistry.
In terms of my EC’s, I am in my high schools FIRST Robotics club in which I am the Secretary, FBLA in which I am the Treasurer, Franklin Township Youth Council in which I am the Co-Committee Head of the Education Committee, and a local Taekwondo school in which I am a black belt instructor in. I am really worried that I have not done anything directly related to the medical field so I have taken a honors biology course out of school for enrichment purposes through Johns Hopkins CTY which I will be finishing up this summer and also I am attending this mini oncology camp this summer as well. I will register starting this fall to do volunteering at a local hospital for 75+ hours, join my high school American Red Cross Club for junior year onwards, and apply for a couple of camps related to the medical field the following summer(2016 year).

Is what I am doing good? Not enough? Or too much? Any advice would be greatly appreciated, thank you guys so much in advance.

Thanks,
Rohit

Sorry if I misworded this but by 7-8 year pre-med program I mean a 7-8 year bs/md program.

BS/MD programs are extremely tough to get into- harder than traditional medical school. It’s not a bad thing to apply to a few BS/MD programs but unless you’re 99th percentile in every test for maths and sciences and all A’s at school.

But you seem to be on the right path.

Get some volunteering in and do some research if you can find a lab in your area. I’ve been shadowing and doing research- that’s pretty much enough. But anything medical you can do, do it. Become an EMT if you can, I couldn’t because sports and such but do it.

Alright thank you so much @uafootball27

They are hard to get into. I know someone who got into the one at Brown. He was strong students and oddly enough got denied for regular admission at several schools, including Vanderbilt. Admissions is a bit of a crap shoot these days.

Anyway, look at some programs at less competitive schools - I think University of Kansas offers an accelerated BA/MD program. (6 year)

Next summer, you might try some medical research. See mysummeradvisor.com for some premed or biology programs and look for ones that offer research opportunities.

There just aren’t that many clinical opportunities for a high school student, beyond volunteering and shadowing. They aren’t going to put an IV in somebody!
