I have this idea that some ECs may be a black mark against you, even if it's subconscous on the part of the reader of the application. For example, someone posted that he was very into hunting (you know, killing Bambi's mother.) A school isn't going to reject you BECAUSE you're a hunter, but if the human being reading the application is very much against hunting, he may have an unconsious negative view of your app and decide in favor of someone else.

So let's say that the person who reads your app fled Cuba and is very much against communism....she may read your app and just have this negative feeling about you, or put you in the "maybe" stack when you should have been in the "yes" stack. Of course, like others have said, the EC may move you from the "maybe" stack" to the "Yes" stack of another reader.

Totally your decision. Is a "plain vanilla" application better or not? If you put it down and you don't get in, will you spend the rest of your life kicking yourself for putting it down, convinced that that was the one factor that kept you out, or can you live with the result no matter what? If a bit of time passes and you're still uncertain about whether to include it (ie, thinking about it more than you should), then leave it off.

I don't necessarily agree. If it's something you spent 10 hours a week working on, you're obviously pretty devoted to it. If a college would disagree with that, like someone else stated, maybe you don't belong there anyway.

You could still include it in your app but not actually use the word communism. Say something like "volunteer at political organization" or something.

The college app is an opportunity to let a college see more of who you are. I think putting down something as vanilla as "volunteer at political organization" undermines your participation. It becomes meaningless.

I don't know- maybe putting it down would help get you accepted, diversity + they don't want to reject you and have it considered discrimination. Just my .02 cents, I'm not an expert or anything. :)

Anything that you like counts as an EC, and it'd be wise to put it down other than the ones that are lacking in common sense (rape, celebrity stalking, animal torture...etc)
