Hii,
Apart from the academic excellence required for ivy leagues, stanford, mit; what extracurriculars are needed?( please explain in detail)

I will be applying in 2013 so i have one full year to maximise my chances so how should i utilise this time?

Winning the Nobel Prize would be a good EC. For the Ivy’s probably the Peace Prize. For MIT, Physics or Chemistry would be good.

I suggest building a time machine. That would be really impressive. Then you could go back to your Freshmen and Sophomore years and start working on your EC’s.

In theory, EC’s are suppose to be something you are interested/passionate about, and willingly devote time to. Starting something totally new in your Junior year is hard. Best to continue doing something you have already done, but do it at a higher level. Are you involved in any clubs? Then become the President, or other officer.

^
Leadership positions don’t mean anything. Admissions officers know that most high school leadership positions are popularity contests and don’t carry much responsibility. They’re only really helpful if you can demonstrate that you actually accomplished something as a leader.

OP, you shouldn’t be picking things based on what you think will look good. It will backfire. Do what you enjoy. You’ll end up accomplishing more and having stronger ECs.

OperaDad, thx a lot but unfortunately there are no clubs in my school…will think on the lines u told…

It doesn’t have to be school clubs. Do you volunteer somewhere? Do you mold clay, play an instrument, shoot Archery, rock climber, martial arts? Take something to the next level. For instance, if you are a Boy Scout, go for the Eagle Scout. If you are a rock climber, talk about some of the climbs you have done.

Maybe your EC for the year can be to get clubs started at your school. Help the school to write a policy, and to get kids and teachers involved.

Read the threads that have been starred at the top of each forum. http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/college-admissions/82799-how-impress-adcoms-your-extracurriculars.html

Then do a search for extracurriculars and EC and dozens of threads on CC will pop up that have already answered all your questions on this subject.

And OperaDad is 100% correct by the way.

Opera dad thanks a lot!

Idealist is a terrific website that offers both jobs and volunteer opportunities all over the world. Check it for your area.

Also, a paid job, even retail or fast food, is an excellent EC. You don’t need to volunteer.

Wordworker thanks a lot:-)

Your school doesn’t have many clubs? Well that’s perfect. Start one.

I’m a relatively small school (~700) and I thought about all the things I loved doing. I’ve been playing chess for almost all my life and I decided to start a chess club with a friend! There’s always a way to do things, don’t wait for people to hand you things.

Hope you take this into consideration!
