How important are EC's for admission to miami?

Miami looks at all aspects of an applicant's background. GPA and test scores are important. However, leadership and public service are also highly regarded by Miami. For example, I recall someone from my freshman dorm whose test scores and GPA were in the bottom 30% of accepted students. He was told he was admitted due to his exceptional leadership experience (HS student body president, among other things). Also, unique skills and interests are taken into account. It is important to make sure these are noted on your application. For example, if you play the clarinet and are interested in marching band or the orchestra - and the Miami marching band is in need of clarinet players - this could help your chances. (The Miami marching band is awesome, by the way.) Miami wants to know not only what you've been involved in and accomplished in HS, but what your goals are and what you'd like to get involved in at the college level.
