Extra Curriculars

After reviewing some of the "chance me threads" I've started to worry a bit about the whole application process. Time after time I see people posting about National awards, positions in some Societies and Federations etc. Coming from a country where sporting competition rarely advances outside of school, research opportunities are infinitesimal not to mention subject-specific competitions are almost non-existent, how am i supposed to fare against the average American when such possibilities just don't exist?
Do admissions officers take this into consideration?

Yes, they do. Applicants are always considered in the context of their environment, and that’s what the school profile/letters of recommendation/essays are for. You won’t be penalized for not having any awards when they’re not even offered in your country, or if nobody around you has even heard of them.

Also - at most schools (except the very top schools), being an international student makes you a very desirable addition to the student body.
