Extra Letter of Recommendation?

Did anyone send in extra letters of recommendation? If so, from which teachers? I kind of want to, but I have a feeling they strongly discourage extras...

thanks!

I did, but not from a teacher. It was from my TASP factotum who also is a Columbia '09 grad, and we’d spent a lot of time discussing Columbia.

I think it’s not that they discourage additional recs outright, but rather, if it says something that the counselor recs/teacher recs say, then send it in. You don’t want additional info saying stuff that other parts of your app say. Make every piece count.

They don’t discourage them that strongly. I think what they essentially say is that they don’t want additional comments on work in a high school setting. I will look up the official policy and post it in a little bit.

hm thanks guys! i was thinking about sending in a rec letter from my piano teacher, but i doubt it will help? (i applied for the Columbia-Juilliard program, and I got an audition).

This is straight from them. I’d say it’s your call, since it is additional insight not gained from your other recs. I personally wouldn’t submit it because your record with the piano is almost certainly prominent on your application if you are thinking about Juilliard, and if you are auditioning they will see your skill in person. It seems like it would be a little superfluous, but this is just my opinion and I am only an applicant.

I agree with wombatsoup. I endorse the following of instructions.

alrighty. i didn’t think it was a good idea in the first place…just wanted some confirmation!
