Extra Math

So, I've been really interested in math for a while, so after 8th grade I took Geometry over the summer then after 9th grade I take Pre-Calculus over the summer, and now as a sophomore I'm in Calculus. Since I live in Ann Arbor, I'll probably be taking Calc 2 and 3 at Michigan next year. Do you guys think this will improve my chances of getting in and if so, how much? Also, does anybody have experience taking math at a University while in high school?

Thanks

No, the impact will be minimum. Your summer time should be better spent with some meaningful EC activities than always studying for math. Being one or two grades ahead in math is no big deal in the eyes of admission committee.

My S is a high school senior and is currently taking Calc 2 and 3 at Michigan. It is different from high school math but he is in no way seriously challenged.

I disagree. I’m a senior in high school currently taking multivariable calc at the college near me (4 year not cc) and me and 6 other kids were admitted because my calc teacher teaches there as well. Anyways Ive had a few interviews and they all expressed how impressive it was. Is it super extraordinary? Probably not. But is it impressive? Yes. Does it set you apart? Definitely as most seniors arent taking levels beyond calculus so I think its definitely worth doing and its definitely not going to hurt you. It’ll only help set you apart

It is impressive, but it also depends how strong of a math student you are. Math at Michigan is 95% exams, so if you have been using HW as a buffer for your grade, don’t count on it helping you at all at UofM

I’m also from the Ann Arbor area :P. Definitely will look good and show that you challenged yourself.

I think it’ll help if you do well in the classes. Presumably you are also good at Math, so you should take something other than just 116/215. Consider taking 295/296 if you think you might be interested in being a math major in college. Not only will taking those make you look good, but it should presumably be very interesting to you (much more so than 116/215 could be) but will help you prepare for much tougher higher level math classes.

If you are only interested in 116/215, I recommend you just take Math at WCC. There’s nothing special about the standard math classes at Michigan, and it’s not worth the cost over WCC.

i agree with vladenschlutte

vlandenschlutte, I hadn’t thought about what class I would be taking so thanks, since I’ll probably have to pick which class I sign up for pretty soon, so that sounds good since I probably will focus on math in college.

Thanks, leighhopeful, yeah, that’s kind of what I thought.
