Extra rec - bad idea?

This summer I interned/worked at a nearby university as part of a fairly selective program for high school students (they never told us acceptance rate, but according to them it's "highly selective"). I spent the summer doing research with a graduate student. We were technically working under an advising professor, but I rarely saw him, so if I were to ask for a rec it would be from the grad student (who I saw like 6 hours a day 4 days a week). Is it a good idea to ask him for a rec or not? Would college admissions just be annoyed at the extra rec?

Not annoyed so much as your file gets diluted. You and I can establish right now with a high probability what might be in that grad student’s LoR for you.

The fact is your teachers are best positioned to be your advocate and mention your standing amongst hundreds of your peers. The grad student – not so much. Thus it doesn’t add much in all likelihood.

Extra recs are rarely a good idea or much use. The only one my kids ever used what from an academic activity coach my kid had for four years who was a graduate of U Chicago where my kid was applying. The rec was just sent to U Chicago, no place else. My kid got in everyplace she applied without extra recs. If I were you I wouldn’t do it.
