Extra Recommendation from HS Coach

ED has been submitted. Coach offered to write a letter of recommendation. Am thinking this might help because it would emphasis leadership/teamwork (business school) and I am not sure that this comes across as strongly as it might in the application.

How do colleges that ask for 2 recommendations and a third only if it adds something to the application regard this?

I’m another parent, so I’m not sure I know the answer, but I’ll offer my opinion. If you think the coach will write a glowing recommendation that really does say something not reflected in the application - something about a great work ethic, working through adversity, a natural leader among peers, etc., go ahead and send it. If you get the impression he’ll write something pretty generic ('it’s been a pleasure working with johnny, he’s dependable and works very hard for the team"), it probably isn’t worth sending.

My son sent in an extra letter of rec last year. I don’t think it will hurt him, and it may help. Good luck!

I’d add that sending in one additional recommendation isn’t like sending in 25. From the admissions sessions I’ve attended recently, it’s sounding like if you have one or two truly exceptional recs to add that include info/qualities not shown elsewhere on the app, go ahead. (One woman running an info session told of a friend who’s an admissions official at an Ivy. One applicant sent in 68 letters of recommendation. Person did not get in.)
