I am planning on sending in only one teacher recommendation. Do you think it would be okay if I send in an extra letter of recommendation from a private music teacher who knows me extremely well?
I know that some schools discourage sending in more than what's required, but for Rice, there are already plenty of applicants sending in two teacher recs..

Okay here's the thing. If it starts out like "Bill is an excellent student. He has displayed flashes of excellence..." and so on then it probably will get read a little and not even bothered with.
The admission director of rice said that he like looks at everything though. However, if he looks at like 1 extra letter and theres like 5 other letters he probably won't read the rest if it looks really generic.

Bottom-line:
If it seems like he'll write you something generic, i wouldn't

When I met with Alexis Kramer, asst. Director of Admission, she said to send in only one, it MUST be from a teacher, preferably one in a subject in which you plan to pursue further study in. The reason is, they want to know how you do academically. They are sure everyone else has wonderful things to say about you because they would not write a letter if they did not. You can submit the letter if you want, it will be scanned into the system but not everyone will read it.
