I am applying to school X and they require 1 recommendation. I was going to ask a professor who used to teach at school X for a recommendation.

I wanted to know if schools care if I send extra recommendations. I was also going to send one from a teacher who presently teaches at both school X and my school. Additionally I was going to send a recommendation from my Congressman who I used to work for.

Should I send all three when they only require 1?

I contacted one of my schools and asked them the same thing, except they require 2. They do not have a problem with it, in fact they practically encouraged me. However, I don't know your college. If I were you I would contact them because every school has their own policies.

If they all share something different about you, than go for it.

I would send as many recommendations to make yourself look good as possible...to a point. I wouldn't send 895348945234 recommendations. Three is perfectly fine though.

I agree with sachmoney that three is a perfect number for letter of recommendations. It's good to see three different perspectives but more than that is too much.
