extra seating, futons, soft chairs, etc. questions

Hello! Any input would be nice from students/parents who have been inside of Stambaugh or its sister type buildings. I hear Stambaugh has pretty decent space per average room, even if you don't get some unusually large room/corner room/triple room. We are scoping out little futons/extra seating options at Ikea and places like that. My son at Duke had a wonderful foam light to carry, no springs mini-couch that opened to be a twin bed from Pier One that I believe legions of people borrowed over four years--but alas, he bequeathed it to someone other than his Vandy brother. Needless to say that investment was extremely well-used in four years at another college. However, Pier One is also out of this business for some reason. I had Pier One deliver that dorm sofa a couple weeks after college started..and after my son and his roommie had decided together on how to arrange their room years ago and it was worth its weight in gold. (I don't think it is fair to show up with big items without input from your roommate re their preferences.)

The Vandy website has posted very helpful Commons Rooms videos that make it easy to see that most people will loft and put their desks and two dressers under the bed, leaving some floor space for things like a mini fridge and extra seating besides the desk chair.

So...did most of you wait to see your room, and then run out to Target or somewhere to pick up a little seating item? Are there places that cater to VAndy students that sell futon type quality dorm stuff or do you have to haul out to a mall arena somewhere in Nashville. We will be in Nashville a day early and can shop locally...but spouse is also coming in from a business trip to Northern VA and could bring an Ikea item from the DC store..

what did some of you do? I realize the Stambaugh room will morph into a smaller room sophomore year on a more traditional hall somewhere in older dorms.

thanks!

I definitely recommend you wait and see the room before purchasing any additional furnishings. While some rooms are reportedly quite spacious, others (such as my daughter’s last year) have no room for anything beyond what comes with the room.

My son was in Stambaugh last year. The rooms are great and are reasonably spacious. There is a Target near by (less than 15 minutes by car) and we made almost all large purchases near campus after his move in (we had a very early move in time). The whole move in process is was very well run and you should have no trouble getting items into the dorm after the initial move in. Good luck my son really loves Vandy.

thank you, minoafrau and the o dad, appreciations.
