My middle school offered Spanish 1 to seventh graders and I decided to take the course. Because of this, I’m able to take five years of foreign language (Spanish 1, 2, 3, 4, and AP). However, I do not really enjoy Spanish and I kind of want to skip Spanish 4 and go straight to AP Spanish. This means I’ll have space for one more AP course for my senior year schedule. So my question is, does 1 extra year of foreign language or 1 extra AP class stand out more to admission officers? Do highly selective colleges have a preference for one?
The most competitive colleges went to see four years of foreign language in high school. I would take the Spanish.
First, if you don’t enjoy Spanish, I’d talk to a Spanish teacher to see if going from Spanish 3 to AP Spanish is eevn advisable.
Second, either choice is fine as long as you get to level 4 of Spanish; choose whichever path interests you more and in which you can get a good grade. Do not choose a class to impress a hypothetical admissions officer; that is just folly.
Well at my school, most people go directly from Spanish 3 to AP Spanish. Spanish 4 is rarely take because it only covers culture.
Thanks for your advice, I think I’ll just choose the extra AP class. As I said before, I’m not really interested in Spanish
I would highly consider getting that 4th year of a FL, even if its Spanish 4.
