I am just curious since I am involved in a lot of extracurricular activities and have volunteered for 200+ hours but don’t have the best grades, how much it truly impacts your admissions to colleges. I have been told that some colleges look at extracurricular activities more than grades. If that is true can some of you share your experiences involving extracurricular activities and your admission process? Thanks
It honestly depends on your grades. Colleges will look at your GPA and course load first, then testing scores, then E.Cs and essays. Your grades are the key here. Colleges will sometimes use E.Cs to decide who gets in between the 3.8 and 3.6. If you get what I mean? If you’re applying to a highly selective school with less than a 3.0 then don’t expect E.Cs to save you. It just shows you passions, leadership, and dedication-which makes you a well rounded person. Key there is well-rounded. You need the grades, E.Cs, scores, and essays to make you a complete individual for admission.
That’s what i thought i have been in-between a 3.5 and 3.8 GPA all of high school and have a lot of E.Cs. I am planning on attending a 4-year University and am just scared because my GPA isn’t as great as I want it to be and I will be a senior next year. I just want to know what I need to fix while I can. Thanks for your feedback.
You should be good then. It honestly just depends on the university. Since you have a pretty good GPA, then it should work out in your favor. Work on keeping your grades up though! Best of luck to you.
The vast majority of colleges don’t consider ECs at all. Admission is most influenced by GPA, class rigor, and scores.
I would be careful with what Erin’s Dad said. With a good GPA like that you may be looking at some pretty selective schools, in which ECs are very important.
scared of what? Maybe you won’t get into a top-20 US News ranked college, but so? If you have a 3.5-.8 you will have the choice of hundreds and hundreds of fine colleges, assuming getting a good education is what you are interested in. If it is impressing your HS friends with the name of where you are going, in that case maybe things aren’t looking so hot.
I am absolutely not trying to impress my friends, many of them are not into the whole college idea to be honest and I do not share any of my after high school plans because they’ll look at my as if I’m crazy. I think I am just trying to make myself happy which may sound wrong but its just been one of my “goals”, but thank you I know I shouldn’t be worried and all I truly want is a good education.
