On my application, I do about 7 activities pretty devotedly... and when I totaled all my seemingly reasonable hours per activity, I get around 28-30 hours... That's crazy...but honestly it isn't that much when spread across the week.

But in all seriousness, I don't think it'd be right to just take off one of my activities on my common app because that'd just be stupid, since I've devoted so much time to it.

What should I do about this? How much do colleges care about these numbers besides the activity--it seems so silly? What is a reasonable amount of weeks/year?

just put down what you came up with at first. just make sure that it’s accurate and double check your calculations (28 hours per week would be about 4 hours per day…). if that’s all fine then just include all your activities.

also, if your activities are spread through out the year (some during summer, some during school, etc.) this really doesn’t matter

What matters about ECs depends on the colleges. These should be sgnificant activities, not just commitments at hs. The keywords are substance, responsibilities and impact. Run it through that filter.

^ @lookingforward… yeah these ec’s are very in depth!!! And I am looking at UChicago, UVA, Georgetown, Yale, Stanford… so you can expect my activities to atleast be pretty good haha. I’m not worried about content and substance–just the apparent huge time I spend on them

Ok. Make it make sense- they aren’t likely to add up hours unless something looks too screwy. You aren’t just showing what you did, but something about judgment and prioritization.

^ Alright. But if I may ask, how many hours do you think would be reasonable? 4 hours a day seems like a varsity sport
